14 Years Later, Disney Is Finally Merging Marvel And Star Wars Into One Universe

For as massive and all-encompassing a multimedia empire as that of Disney, it may come as a surprise that it took nearly a decade and a half since acquiring Star Wars to properly cross it over with Marvel on the comics publisher's home turf. While the logistics of such worlds overlapping are mind-boggling, that hasn't stopped Kevin Smith and David Marquez from teaming up to bring the characters and seemingly story of the very first Star Wars movie into Marvel's central comics universe via Earth-616. Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles is coming at the start of 2027, and it marks an unusual milestone as announced yesterday.
But in looking into this story, it seems especially surprising given Marvel's ties to the earliest days of Star Wars comics, but this crossover looks to honor even that legacy. Bringing Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance forces together with Earth's Mightiest Heroes to fight the Galactic Empire and various Avengers-level threats, Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles will merge the two franchises, acquired by Disney in 2012 and 2009 respectively, into one universe, for better or for worse. It seems utterly surprising it took nearly 14 years for it to happen, but it's finally on the way.
Star Wars Will Join The Marvel Universe In 2027
Given the announced project is a five-issue limited series coincidentally commemorating 50 years of Star Wars, it's important to note out the gate that this crossover, while indicated to be a serious intermingling of all concerned characters, won't last forever. But it's a pretty fitting way to celebrate 50 years, especially since the franchise has a rich history of comics starting with Marvel, with its first project being a limited series retelling A New Hope a month ahead of the original film's debut. It's a full-circle moment but with a bonkers twist, perfect for the comic book medium to creatively bring the universes together, sparking plenty of curiosity as to what brought them together and how it'll end.
With the original announcement of Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles pointing to a "reality-shattering spell" lifting the 1977-era Star Wars characters and placing them in the Marvel universe, there's certainly compelling cooperation ahead. Incorporating an array of powerful characters, including multiple Force-sensitive fighters across Jedi and Sith affiliations, from a time within the franchise where the source of their power had far greater mysticism, could work well in this collaboration. But the biggest, arguably most fun question, raised by glimpses at the cover art, is just how some of the featured Marvel characters could play a part.
Multiple Unlikely Marvel Heroes & Villains Are Tackling Foes From A Galaxy Far, Far Away
Such an event raises significant questions, such as how street-level superheroes like Daredevil, featured on the unveiled cover artwork, could meaningfully factor into a plot involving intergalactic warfare. However, amusingly, he has been known to seize the high ground advantage from time to time. But his proximity to a looming Thanos in the background seems to call back to the multiple instances where the Devil of Hell's Kitchen was pitted against villains and fellow heroes absurdly above his weight class. Yet, something about him having Obi-Wan Kenobi feels oddly satisfying, even if it'll hardly change the Jedi master's ultimate fate.
Meanwhile, the notion of high-profile Marvel villains working alongside the Galactic Empire is equally wild at points, and at others, oddly fitting. Doctor Doom absolutely passes the vibe check posed next to Darth Vader, and Thanos is more than sufficient as an imposing, immensely powerful ally to the Empire with doubtless ulterior motives, while Ultron blends particularly well into the background.

The most compelling, easily, is the notion of Venom's symbiote mingling with Star Wars characters, and what it would mean for him to bond with somebody who can use the Force, particularly with somebody already on the Dark Side. It's just the sort of perfectly outlandish hypothetical that is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore for Smith, so his incorporation among the roster is a tantalizing one. Disney bringing together these universes will almost certainly result in an unserious extravaganza of uncertain reception, but it'll also be the perfect sort of wacky project with some otherwise-unthinkable "What if?" scenarios, so Star Wars and Marvel can't afford to squander this opportunity.
