3 Best Movies To Watch On HBO Max This Weekend (July 25-26)

Many subscribers tune in to watch the stellar shows like House of the Dragon or The Pitt, but there is so much more to HBO Max. Through partnerships with TCM and Warner Bros., the streamer's catalog features films that go all the way back to the birth of cinema. What's more, many new releases hit the platform as soon as they get done with their theatrical runs.

Because HBO Max changes from month to month, there is a never-ending series of new additions. This can make picking something to watch a real chore, even though Max's catalog is smaller than many of its competitors. Thankfully, the curated nature of the movies on the streaming service means that almost everything available to watch is of a higher standard of quality.

This weekend's selections draws from three very different genres. There is a spine-tingling horror film from the 2000s, a raunchy recent comedy, and even a Denzel Washington action flick that kicked off a trilogy. 3 The Strangers (2008)

The home invasion subgenre of horror is especially creepy, and no film does it better than The Strangers. The plot concerns a couple who visit a remote cabin while on vacation. Their bucolic bliss is interrupted by the arrival of masked killers. In an era where horror had largely gone off the rails, the simplicity of The Strangers is what makes it so frightening.

It incorporates slasher movie clichés, while telling a largely grounded story. The fact that it could happen makes it doubly frightening, and the film makes the most of its core concept. Even though Halloween is still months away, The Strangers is the perfect horror films for any time of year. Don't let the middling reviews fool you, it's a bona fide Aughts classic.

2 No Hard Feelings (2023)

Comedy has sadly been on the decline in recent years, but 2023's No Hard Feelings hearkens back to the Golden Age of the Aughts. In the film, Jennifer Lawrence plays a woman desperate to save her family home. To make some money, she agrees to date the awkward son of a wealthy family. The unabashed sex comedy really plays to Lawrence's strengths.

It isn't afraid to go there in some moments, but it stays grounded with nice character arcs. It fulfills its mission as a low-brow comedy, but has touches of heartwarming joy that elevates it above the cynical. With cinematic comedy in short supply these days, No Hard Feelings is the perfect excuse for a laugh on HBO Max.

1 The Equalizer (2014)

The Equalizer is another in a long line of action-packed revenge movies, but the Denzel Washington vehicle is one step beyond its competitors. Washington stars as Robert McCall, a man with a mysterious past. When a neighbor gets involved with violent gang members, McCall refuses to stand by. Though it's based on the eponymous classic TV show, the movie forges its own identity.

Washington's performance is really what puts it over the top, and he is perfectly cast as the stoic badass. The action is crisp and fast-paced, and it strikes a nice balance between a rowdy action flick and a tense thriller. The entire Equalizer trilogy is currently streaming on HBO Max, but the first installment remains the best of the bunch.
