8 Greatest Marvel Villains Who Became Heroes

Across Marvel Comics’ long history, there are quite a few heroes and antiheroes who were initially introduced on the opposing side of the fight. Whether they were simply misled or willingly crossed lines to achieve their goals, these characters were once antagonistic forces that the heroes had to overcome. While they eventually fight alongside the heroes or even become some of the best-known characters in Marvel, the start of their journeys is often far from what casual or new readers might expect.

Marvel’s willingness to let characters evolve beyond their original roles is exactly part of what made these heroes and antiheroes so compelling. Whereas some have abandoned causes they no longer believed in, others find themselves questioning the people or circumstances that shaped their actions. In any case, their past did not stop them from choosing to align with the heroes over villains or other antagonistic forces, allowing them to become some of the brand’s best characters.

The Punisher

The Punisher first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 as an antagonistic force, manipulated by the Jackal into hunting Spider-Man. He was initially going to be a one-shot foil to the hero and actively took steps against the hero because he was convinced that Spider-Man was a dangerous criminal. Frank Castle immediately hunted him down with the intent to kill, making him dangerous and unpredictable.

However, once he realized that the Jackal was deceiving him into targeting an innocent man, he turned against the real villain. The Punisher then redirected his violent methods toward other criminals and, due to his massive popularity, Marvel gave him space to develop by fleshing out his backstory, effectively turning him into one of the brand’s best antiheroes.

Deadpool

Deadpool made his debut in The New Mutants #98 as a mercenary hired to assassinate the titular team's leader, Cable. Wade Wilson initially took contracts for money and used lethal force without hesitation, often showing zero remorse for his victims and even taking pleasure in his work. His earliest appearances portrayed him as a ruthless, unpredictable adversary rather than the fourth-wall-breaking antihero fans have come to love.

However, that all began to change when Deadpool got his very own ongoing series in 1997. His backstory was expanded, and his goals and ambitions grew clearer. While he never fully let go of his willingness to use lethal force, he eventually directed it toward those he believed deserved it and actively tried to align himself with the good guys, turning him into Marvel’s most iconic antihero.

Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 before making his first full appearance in the next issue. Initially, he was a Canadian government agent who was dispatched to apprehend the Hulk, and their first encounter presented Logan as an aggressive combatant who was willing to attack anyone in his way, including the Wendigo, who was in the middle of a battle against the Hulk.

Originally meant to be a short-term character, Wolverine found a new home in Giant-Size X-Men #1, where his relationship with his teammates gradually gave him a greater purpose. Since then, Logan has become one of the most popular X-Men characters and a defining pillar for Marvel, who stands as not only a formidable, seasoned hero, but also an indispensable mentor.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

It’s hard to separate the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, given that the twins share a backstory. The two were originally introduced in Uncanny X-Men #4 as members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. However, neither of them shared a deep hatred of humanity or fully believed in Magneto’s cause. Instead, they felt indebted to him since he saved them from an angry mob, leading them to act as reluctant villains.

When Magneto disappeared, Wanda and Pietro took the opportunity to abandon the Brotherhood and later went on to join Captain America’s Avengers in The Avengers #16. Under his guidance, the two were able to establish themselves as dependable heroes and valuable members of the team, effectively turning them both into widely recognized champions of justice.

Hawkeye

Hawkeye’s first attempt at becoming a hero took a drastic turn for the worse when the police mistook him for a burglar, forcing him to flee and branding him as a criminal for a crime he didn’t commit. While on the run, he met Black Widow, who was at that point still a Soviet spy targeting Iron Man, driving him to join her cause out of infatuation in Tales of Suspense #57.

However, his allegiance began to crumble as Black Widow’s ruthlessness became increasingly impossible to ignore, and he came to realize that he never truly wanted to be a villain. Realizing how badly his own moral code was compromised, Clint searched for a way back to heroism, leading him to break into the Avengers Mansion to prove himself and ask to join the team.

Rogue

Rogue made her first appearance in Avengers Annual #10 as a formidable adversary after attacking Ms. Marvel (later to become known as Captain Marvel) on Mystique’s orders. During the encounter, Rogue’s prolonged absorption of Carol Danvers left her with the permanent abilities of flight, superhuman strength, invulnerability, and mind, while leaving Danvers in a coma.

The consciousness she absorbed from Carol Danvers eventually became a source of torment for Rogue, leaving her desperate to find a way to regain control of her own mind. In Uncanny X-Men #171, she turned to Professor X and the X-Men for help despite their initial wariness of her. However, Rogue gradually earned their trust through her actions and went on to become one of the most well-known members of the X-Men and a worthy leader.

Black Widow

Black Widow was introduced in Marvel’s Tales of Suspense #52 as a KGB operative working against Iron Man and American interests. Trained through the Soviet’s Red Room program, Natasha Romanoff relied on espionage, sabotage, and manipulation to accomplish her missions. She even recruited Hawkeye to take on Tony Stark, proving just how effectively she could exploit others in the name of completing her directives.

Natasha’s loyalty, however, began to crack due to her relationship with Hawkeye, with his moral convictions challenging her own worldview. Eventually, she breaks free from her handlers' control and defects to the United States. Since then, she has put in effort to atone for her past and, in time, she formally joins the Avengers. Despite her villainous past, Black Widow grows into one of the Avengers’ greatest heroes.

Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer made his debut in Fantastic Four #48 as the herald of Galactus, scouting planets for the cosmic entity to consume. Although Norrin Radd had only accepted the role to spare his own homeworld, his actions still made him a threat to countless civilizations, and Earth was no exception. He initially was preparing the world for Galactus’ arrival before an encounter with Alicia Masters forced him to reconsider the consequences of his actions.

Alicia’s compassion helped restore his mind, allowing Norrin to defy his master and aid the Fantastic Four in saving Earth. Galactus responded by exiling and imprisoning him on Earth, where he dedicated himself to protecting humanity, no matter what light they saw him in. He eventually gained freedom and used it as an opportunity to seek redemption and protect other civilizations.
