After 9 Years, Black Clover Delivers One Of The Best Fights In Shonen History
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Black Clover Season 2, Episode 5!!
Since its debut in 2017, Black Clover has gradually gained popularity, becoming one of the most prominent anime series of its generation. However, even though the show has often been criticized for relying on many of the typical clichés found in other Shonen Jump titles, without offering anything truly revolutionary, Black Clover has just demonstrated what makes it so special. In fact, not only has Black Clover Season 2 featured one of the best battles in the series to date, but it's also a fight worthy of going down in shonen history.
Shonen manga particularly shines at creating inspiring, spirited heroes who resonate with fans and become iconic figures, such as Naruto or Goku. Black Clover follows this same tradition, depicting Asta’s journey from an orphaned commoner with no magic to one of the most powerful mages, capable of saving his kingdom. What’s interesting is that, while in most anime series it’s usually only the protagonists who defeat the most powerful villains, Black Clover sets a new standard by giving a supporting character the chance to shine in an epic battle.
Black Clover's Magna vs. Dante Delivers One of the Best Underdog Victories In Shonen
Even though it was highly anticipated, the fight between Magna Swing and Dante Zogratis was significantly improved in Black Clover Season 2, episode 5. With a veteran known for his work on Naruto at the helm, this battle stands apart from previous ones due to its ambitious execution that excels in every respect: from the storyboarding and emotionally charged vocal performances to fluid animation that effectively conveys the overwhelming force behind Dante’s gravity-magic strikes, seamlessly transitioning into a high-tension, pure fistfight that leaves no room to breathe.
The Magna vs. Dante fight was one of the most highly regarded battles in Black Clover following its appearance in the manga in 2021. The fact that it featured one of the members often deemed the weakest of the Black Bulls, a commoner with little magical power, against a member of the Dark Triad (a major antagonist in an even stronger form than the one Asta and Yami had struggled so mightily to face) magnificently encapsulates the series' core themes.
While Black Clover is proficient in team-based fights, this battle sets that aside to become the ultimate underdog victory. It serves as the best representation, within shonen, of how hard work can beat natural talent, a recurring topic of debate among fans that has also surfaced in memorable clashes such as Gaara vs. Rock Lee. Rather than simply stalling for time until reinforcements arrive and avoiding both sudden power-ups and the "power of friendship" trope, Magna spent two years perfecting a one-time-use spell that allowed him to go toe-to-toe with Dante, proving that hard work pays off in the end.
Black Clover Proves Its Place Among 2026's Best Anime With an Unforgettable Battle
Black Clover returned with a much better-executed adaptation in its second season, which covers one of the most anticipated moments in the story: the Spade Kingdom arc. But, even with the improvement in quality seen thus far, the series manages to surpass itself with the Magna vs. Dante fight in Black Clover Season 2.
Although Black Clover has, until now, remained below the level of recognition enjoyed by its peers, such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, the level of care and refinement in this adaptation, which brings the manga’s most impactful moments to life, positions the anime as a contender for one of the best of 2026.
Black Clover's story has always revolved around Asta’s efforts to grow stronger and become a better version of himself in order to achieve his dream. The fact that the series has taken the time to develop supporting characters like Magna, giving them their moments to showcase their potential, demonstrates why Black Clover has become so meaningful to its fans. Magna vs. Dante is a reminder that anyone can surpass their own limits, becoming one of the most inspiring moments in all of Black Clover's anime, which is sure to reach even greater heights in its upcoming episodes.
