Prime Video's upcoming God of War adaptation benefits a lot from Dave Bautista's casting as Kratos. However, the live-action series still has one major casting challenge to overcome. It is hard not to deny that Prime Video's live-action take on the God of War games has immense potential. But the show already seems to be facing quite a few casting hiccups.
Bautista was not even the first choice for the leading role in the series. Before the former WWE star, Ryan Hurst of the Sons of Anarchy fame was cast to play the character. Unfortunately, due to an injury, the actor was forced to step back from the show. This is when Dave Bautista was considered for the part and finalized as the new live-action Kratos.
While Bautista's casting as Kratos is great news for the Prime Video series, the show seems even more promising after its casting choice for Thor. As reports confirm, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson of the Severance fame has been cast as Thor, and he seems perfect for the role. However, Prime Video's God of War still has to make one major casting decision that could potentially make or break the show.
After Kratos & Thor, Prime Video Will Struggle To Find The Ideal Live-Action Tyr
Prime Video's God of War might have found the ideal Thor and Kratos, but its biggest casting hurdle will be finding the right actor to play Tyr. Tyr stands at a staggering 8 feet 5 inches in the games' Norse saga. This makes him more than a foot taller than Thor (7 feet 4 inches) and two feet taller than Kratos (6 feet 4 inches).
For obvious reasons, the show will have to rely on CGI and camera angles to accurately capture Tyr's towering physical appearance. However, the show will still have to find someone who already possesses a giant-like frame for the part. Not to mention, the actor cast to play the live-action version of Tyr will also need to have incredible range to be able to be able to convey the depth of his story.
In the Norse saga of the God of War games, there is almost a duality to Tyr's characterization. He has a mythic presence that instantly instills fear when he appears on the screen. At the same time, though, he is portrayed as a peaceful diplomat and traveler who almost serves as an idealized mirror to Kratos.
Considering how his level-headed and philosophical composure completely contrasts his massive stature, the actor who ends up playing him will have to strike the perfect balance between his imposing presence and his contemplative nature.
Bautista’s God Of War Casting Sets High Bar For Other Live-Action Roles In The Show
From an appearance standpoint, Olivier Richters seems like a good fit for Tyr in Prime Video's God of War. However, given how Richters is still in the early years of his acting career, it is hard not to wonder if he will land the part. After his performance in Reacher season 3 and casting in Street Fighter, he seems to have the potential to play more nuanced characters like Tyr.
Still, after Bautista's casting, the Prime Video series seems to be setting an incredibly high bar for other actors in the show's roster. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has already proven his ability to play morally complex characters like Thor with his performance as Drummond in Apple TV's Severance. This makes him the perfect choice for Thor.
When it comes to Tyr, though, it is hard not to be curious about who Prime Video's God of War will cast without compromising the character's physicality or depth.
