Airbus Expands Open-Fan Engine Development With A380
Airbus selected the first Airbus A380 ever built to support flight testing for an advanced open-fan propulsion system. The companies continue developing hybrid-electric and heat-recovery technologies for future commercial aircraft.
The SWITCH engine combines hybrid-electric systems with advanced turbofan technology to reduce fuel consumption by about 25%. Engineers also continue evaluating hydrogen fuel cells as an additional energy source. Hybrid-electric propulsion could lower carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions during commercial operations.
Airbus continues expanding sustainable aviation initiatives beyond engine development. Currently, Airbus aircraft can operate using up to a 50% sustainable aviation fuel blend. Additionally, several compatible single-aisle aircraft already support operations using 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
