Akash Holders Vote to Leave Cosmos for Solana, Ending AKT Staking Rewards
TLDR
- Akash Network holders passed Governance Proposal 346 with 97.27% voting yes.
- AKT will launch as an SPL token on Solana in about two to three weeks.
- A one-way, 1:1 migration portal will stay open for two years.
- Staking rewards end at cutover, and validators lose their role 90 days later.
- No cutover date is set yet, and a separate vote is still required.
Akash Network token holders have approved a plan to move the protocol from its own Cosmos-based chain to Solana. Governance Proposal 346 passed on Nov. 2, 2026, with 97.27% of votes cast in favor.
The proposal also spells out what AKT holders will give up. Staking rewards and inflation on the current chain will end when the marketplace switches over, and the network’s roughly 100 validators will lose their role.
Voting ran from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. Turnout reached 69.52% of bonded stake, well above the 33.40% quorum.
About 59.98 million AKT voted yes. Around 796,071 AKT voted no, 888,416 AKT abstained and 765 AKT voted no with veto.
What Changes for AKT Holders
The approval allows AKT to launch as an SPL token on Solana. The launch is expected two to three weeks after the vote, once audits of the token and migration portal are complete.
Holders will swap AKT 1:1 for SPL AKT through a portal that stays open for two years. The new token keeps the same ticker and uses 6 decimals, and total supply does not change.
The swap cannot be reversed. AKT sent through the portal leaves circulation on the old chain, akashnet-2, and there is no path back.
Staked AKT can migrate in a single portal transaction. That step starts the 21-day unbonding period, claims unpaid rewards and queues both for transfer to Solana.
Exchanges will move customer balances on their own schedule, while Console-managed wallets will migrate automatically. AKT held on Osmosis or other IBC chains must return to akashnet-2 first, and no SOL is needed to migrate.
Until cutover, AKT on the current chain still pays gas, earns staking rewards and can vote. The proposal does not set a cutover date.
Why Akash Picked Solana
Akash said it pays the full cost of a sovereign chain without using its powers. Its core team also maintains forks of cosmos-sdk, CometBFT and gogoproto.
Solana was chosen after an open request for proposals and a review of seven options against 15 hard requirements. Only Solana mainnet and an existing EVM layer 2 met every requirement.
The proposal estimates network fees for the whole marketplace at about 0.075 SOL a day. It says a marketplace operation would cost about 9 times less than on an EVM layer 2 on a calm day and about 300 times less under load.
Akash will give up its own consensus, native IBC links and live slashing. Some steps, such as deployment closes and bid refunds, will run through automated processes.
The Solana Foundation has offered engineering, audit and gas-subsidy support, though the plan does not depend on it. Rishin Sharma, head of AI growth at the Solana Foundation, said the group was “thrilled to welcome” Akash.
Founder Greg Osuri said choosing Solana “marks an important milestone” in the goal of making compute a liquid resource. Akash Marketplace, AkashML and Akash Homenode will be available natively on Solana.
The marketplace will not move until audits pass, a provider testnet of at least six weeks runs with 25 or more operators and a 14-day community rehearsal finishes with zero blockers. A separate cutover proposal must also pass.
After cutover, existing leases will keep running for 90 days before the old chain halts. Akash said the token launch date will be announced through official channels and warned that phishing is the top threat, with only one official portal domain.
