Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.
Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.
Since appearing for the first time back in 2009 with Assassin's Creed 2, Ezio Auditore de Firenze has cemented himself as one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. So much so, that, despite Ubisoft choosing to introduce a brand-new assassin for each entry in the franchise, Ezio stayed on for three mainline games, including Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
Fans just could not get enough of the cheeky Italian assassin operating in Renaissance Italy, and although it has been many years since we last saw Ezio in action, it seems as though he is finally set to return this month.
Assassin's Creed: Animus is a board game inspired by the long-running stealth video game series by Ubisoft. Created by Mantic Games’, it began its life as a Kickstarter campaign that went onto raise more than £274,000 courtesy of 2,828 backers. Now, in the competitive tabletop experience, players will get to take on the role of some of Assassin's Creed's most iconic characters as they compete against each other to become the Master Assassin.
The idea of turning Assassin's Creed into a board game seems impossible, but it seems as though Mantic has achieved it with Assassin’s Creed: Animus – The Board Game as one to four players can enter the Animus and take control of a legendary assassin by stepping into their ancestor's memories, much like Desmond in early entries.
Unlike many TTRPG experiences, you will not be working as a team, but rather it will be everybody for themselves, as you all receive your own character, abilities, equipment and objectives, with the goal being to become the Master Assassin. However, this also means that Assassin’s Creed: Animus – The Board Game offers good replayability, as each assassin comes with their own unique playstyle.
Once given your character, you will need to explore locations, investigate secrets, track down targets, and, as always, keep an eye on the competition.
As well as featuring the likes of Ezio Auditore de Firenze, Assassin’s Creed: Animus – The Board Game will also include beloved characters from all across the Ubisoft franchise. This includes taking inspiration from the original Assassin's Creed, as well as Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, and even the underrated Assassin's Creed: Liberation.
Following a very successful Kickstarter campaign, Assassin’s Creed: Animus – The Board Game is finally set to launch this month, with copies being sent out to supporters as we speak. Whilst Ubisoft is working on the next series entry, which is expected to be Assassin's Creed Hexe, this is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the franchise in a never-before-seen way, and of course, it brings to life the likes of Ezio, who many of us still miss to this day.
