Avatar: The Last Airbender’s next show finally gets its first real look at SDCC

I loved every second of Legend of Korra and I'm gonna love this too let's be honest

Anyone involved with the Avatar franchise over the last 20 years deserves a hearty pat on the back and thank you for their perseverance — at every turn it seems like producing the next great story for Aang, Korra, and the greater Avatar saga was a creative hardship tormented by corporate upheaval. So the idea that we’re just months away from a new Avatar series, Seven Havens, feels like a miracle in the world of M. Night Shymalan live-action movie, Nick unceremoniously dumped Korra episodes on its website, Netflix parted ways with the creators for its adaptation, and the Avatar Aang movie was punted to streaming. A miracle that also looks totally rad! And coming out soon!

Premiering out of San Diego Comic-Con 2026, the first teaser trailer for Avatar: Seven Havens whisks fans from the Roaring 20s-esque Legend of Korra continuity to a post-apocalyptic future. The series, which debuts this fall, introduces Pavi, a young Earthbender who — wouldn’t you know it! — discovers she's the new Avatar. With the first look, Paramount announced the cast as well: Saheli Khan stars as “Pavi”, Aishu Devan as “Nisha”, Akshay Khanna as “Karthik”, Major Curda as “Jae,” Sakina Jaffrey as “Agam”, Darren Barnet as “Daemin,” Dianne Doan as “Zi,” and animal-noise god Dee Bradley Baker returns as both “Geet” and “Ruhi.”

According to Nickelodeon's official description, Pavi lives in a world devastated by a mysterious "cataclysm" that has torn apart the physical and spirit worlds (and based on the color of the tornados, may even stem from the latter). Society survives in scattered settlements known as the Seven Havens, and instead of being hailed as a hero, Pavi is feared as god-tier destroyer. If the glimmer of the past seen in the trailer is any indication, Korra did... not leave on good terms with the planet.

Alongside Pavi is her airbender mentor Jae, her long-lost twin sibling, and a cat monkey named Geet. As teased in the footage, she'll uncover more about her "mysterious origins" (Avatar Studios' words) while traversing a landscape that looks more like Mad Max: Fury Road than Lord of the Rings. The SDCC trailer also gives us a look at a sleek new art style from La Chouette, the French studio behind the equally lush Dragon Strikers. It's definitely a different look than Studio Mir's known style, but that Franco comics twist imbues Avatar's continent with a Moebius touch I didn't know I craved.

Let us recall: During Book 2, Vaatu, the core of the Dark Avatar spirit, separated Korra from Raava (the spirit of light and good) and permanently severed her connection to every past Avatar, including Aang. While Korra and Raava defeated Vaatu, the Avatar cycle was essentially rebooted – meaning Pavi should only be able to communicate with Korra, not the Avatars who came before. How Korra plays a role in the series, as well as the reborn Airbender nation, are all burning questions worthy of Sozin’s Comet. The trailer confirms we'll at least see some of what went down in the final years of Korra's tenure.

For all the ups and downs Avatar fans have endured over two decades, we’re eating quite well. Personally, Avatar Aang made me weep like Uncle Iroh singing "Leaves from the Vine.” Seven Havens, unlike 99% of other franchise extensions, catapults into uncharted territory that pushes our understanding of the mythology. Creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are still getting away with it. Thank the Lion Turtle.
