Tom Hiddleston has assured fans that Avengers: Doomsday will have a close connection to the Disney+ series Loki.

Though the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s original Loki was killed by Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, Hiddleston subsequently played an alternate timeline variant of the God of Mischief in Avengers: Endgame. The actor then reprised this Loki variant in his own TV show, which ran for two seasons. In the Loki series finale, this version of the character became the new overseer of the multiverse, and that status will remain intact during Doomsday.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hiddleston promised that the upcoming Marvel movie won’t ignore the evolution Loki went through in his TV show. Instead, he sees Avengers: Doomsday as the beginning of a new chapter in his character’s life, explaining:

Loki felt like a closure. And when Marvel called about Avengers: Doomsday, it was going to be starting from that end point. So there was no sense of unstitching or undoing all of that development. That development still stands as a place to begin.

This Loki variant hailed from just after his defeat in The Avengers, where, unlike his main universe counterpart, he was able to escape from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by stealing the Tesseract. Yet, just like the Loki moviegoers watched from 2011 to 2018, this other Loki ended up going on his own hero’s journey. This happened when he was apprehended by the Time Variance Authority, became partner to Owen Wilson’s Mobius, and met Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie, a female Loki variant, among other characters.

At the end of Loki season 2, the titular protagonist destroyed the TVA’s Temporal Loom, rejuvenated the dying timelines with his magic, and rearranged them into a shape resembling Yggdrasil, the Asgardian World Tree. With Loki now tending to the multiverse from the End of Time, the TVA also took it upon themselves to monitor these infinite timelines rather than pruning them, in particular focusing on tracking down the many variants of Kang the Conqueror.

Kang was set up as Avengers 5’s original villain following his appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but after Marvel Studios fired Jonathan Majors, it was decided to have Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom take his place. Loki, however, will remain an integral player in the events of Avengers: Doomsday. It’s only fitting considering that this movie marks the beginning of the end of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, so Loki would understandably be drawn into Doom’s machinations.

It remains to be seen whether this Loki will share any screen time with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Avengers: Doomsday. Unaware this version of his brother exists, the Asgardian God of Thunder will be searching for Love, his adoptive daughter, in the movie. That will lead to him being drawn into Doomsday’s main conflict that also pulls in other Avengers, the New Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and more.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, opposite Dune: Part Three. It hasn’t been announced yet if Hiddleston will reprise Loki in Avengers: Secret Wars, which comes out on December 17, 2027, and will conclude the Multiverse Saga.
