Benicio Del Toro Is Following Up His Meme-Worthy ‘One Battle After Another’ Role with His First Comedy Series

It’s not as if Benicio Del Toro has never done comedy before, but after his work in “One Battle After Another,” the Oscar winner is clearly entering his “few small beers” phase of his career.

Del Toro will star in what will be his first ever comedy series, a comedy called “Protective Custody” that is set at Apple TV, the streamer announced Wednesday. The series hails from “King of the Hill” and “Beavis and Butthead” creator Mike Judge, as well as Emmy-winner Steve Hely (“Veep,” “The Office”) and Dave King (“Parks and Recreation,” “English Teacher”) alongside executive producer Ben Stiller.

“Protective Custody” will follow a disgraced financier accused of massive fraud who is thrown into protective custody, where he must navigate prison politics, salvage his reputation, and confront the consequences of his actions while awaiting trial. Character details are being kept under wraps.

It’s a reunion for Del Toro and Stiller, who previously worked together on the (not a comedy) limited series “Escape at Dannemora,” which was also an Apple TV series.

Judge will co-write, co-showrun and direct “Protective Custody,” and this is a reunion of Judge, Hely, and King after they all worked together on “Common Side Effects.”

“Protective Custody” is a production of Apple Studios, Red Hour, Propagate Content, and 3 Arts Entertainment, which will all executive produce. Stiller and John Lesher will executive produce for Red Hour; Ben Silverman (“The Office, “Stick”), Howard Owens, and Rodney Ferrell executive produce for Propagate Content; and, Michael Rotenberg (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Silicon Valley,” “King of the Hill”) and Oly Obst (“Nobody Wants This,” “Will Trent”) executive produce for 3 Arts Entertainment. Academy Award-nominee Nanette Burstein will also serve as executive producer.
