The best skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker include passive perks and active abilities, divided into three skill trees. Unlocking the best witchcraft, swordmastery, and vampirism skills is fun, but since you can't respec your skill points, it's also a very daunting task; you don't want to waste points on a useless perk.

To dodge regrets and counter doubts, here's an overview of the best abilities and perks in The Blood of Dawnwalker, divided by type.

How to use skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker

In The Blood of Dawnwalker, skill points are rewarded for leveling up and completing quests. There are three skill trees, including witchcraft, swordmastery, and vampirism. While the swordmastery perks and abilities are always active, no matter the time of day, witchcraft skills and vampirism skills only work during the day and night, respectively.

If you look at a skill tree, you'll find a bunch of passive perks on the left, and a list of abilities on the right. Note that the abilities contain both active abilities (such as special attacks) and passive abilities (such as the chance to inflict bleed). Unlike passive perks, passive abilities must be equipped as an active ability (active effect), or they won't work. You can equip a maximum of four abilities at a time. On top of that, both witchcraft and vampirism each come with three "locked" abilities which cannot be unequipped (but they can still be leveled up).

To unlock new skills on the witchcraft and swordmastery trees, you must obtain the corresponding skill manuals. You can find them as loot or buy them from vendors. To unlock new vampirism skills, you must increase your corruption by drinking blood. Once you've spent 35 skill points (witchcraft and swordmastery), or reached corruption level 15 (vampirism), you can pick one ultimate skill for that skill tree.

Besides one or two skill points, a skill manual, or a certain level of corruption, unlocking a new ability usually costs one time segment. Since you can't reverse time, it's impossible to respec your abilities — so it's very important to level only the best Dawnwalker skills!

Best swordmastery skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Name

Type

Perfect Block

Perfect block restores stamina and activation charges.

Perfect Riposte

Perk

Following a perfect block, attack in the critical direction (the direction of the small red arrow) to deal critical damage and gain a damage bonus.

Counterattack

Perk

Attack after perfect block to deal more damage. Also unlocks a bleed chance at level 3.

Sharp Eye

Perk

Chance to weaken the enemy on a perfect block.

Endless Effort

Perk

Increases stamina.

Sustained Focus

Perk

Increases the number of activation charges (one per level).

Master Fencer

Perk

Increases the number of swordmastery ability slots (one per level).

Artery Strike

Ability

Deal high damage to a single target with a chance to decapitate them. At level 4, the chance to decapitate the enemy is doubled if the enemy is bleeding.

Adrenaline Rush

Ability

Increases attack damage after using active abilities, for a duration of six seconds. From level 2 onward, also increases activation charge restoration after using active abilities.

Swiftness

Ability

Gain attack speed and critical hit chance after perfect block.

Walking Fortress

Ability

Perfect block restores activation charges and reduces cooldown times.

Sword Sage

Ultimate

Resets active ability cooldowns on killing an enemy.

With a bit of practice, it's not too difficult to land perfect blocks consistently. Therefore, the best way to become overpowered in swordmastery is to add a bazillion buffs to successful blocking attempts, as you'll constantly activate them. Put one skill point in Omniblock, but only to access the rest of the skill tree. Next, fully upgrade Perfect Block and Perfect Riposte for consistent stamina regeneration, activation charge restoration, and a damage boost upon every perfect block. Counterattack and Sharp Eye are also great, but if you're short on skill points, consider them optional. One or two points in Sharp Eye would be enough to maintain the weak status on your opponents.

If you still find yourself short on stamina, Endless Effort offers a straightforward solution by increasing your max stamina (two points should suffice). Put at least one point in Sustained Focus to get an extra activation charge (which you'll need for Artery Strike in particular), but go for level 3 if you also want to use the Blood Surge vampirism attack.

Among the active abilities (fully upgrade Master Fencer to equip them all), Artery Strike is the most powerful of the bunch; not only does it deal a high amount of damage, but it has a chance to decapitate the target, with guaranteed success on bleeding targets (see the vampirism tree).

As for the remaining ability slots, pick Adrenaline Rush, Swiftness, and Walking Fortress to get more perfect block-based buffs and quick activation charge regeneration. Since this combination of swordmastery perks already gives you enough activation charge regeneration, go for Sword Sage as your ultimate — it'll take care of lengthy cooldowns.

Remember that swordmastery skills work during both day and nighttime, so you can combine them with the best witchcraft and vampirism skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker. If you're going for weapon damage swordmastery skills, beware that they apply to swords only — not claws!

Best witchcraft skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Name

Type

Effect

Mercurial Fervour

Ability

Grants haste during exploration.

Forbidden Sigils

Perk

Increases the number of witchcraft ability slots (one per level).

Aether Flow

Perk

Reduces witchcraft ability cooldown.

Soul Stigma

Ability

You have a higher critical chance and deal more critical damage against the target. From level 3 onward, the effect will transfer to another enemy on death.

Unholy Vitality

Ability

Regenerates health after using active abilities. From level 3 onward, heals extra based on critical hit damage.

Cycle of Ruin

Ability

Extends the duration of active witchcraft abilities with each landed attack, block, and perfect block. From level 3 onward, critical hits extend the duration more.

Ravenous Flock

Ability

You land guaranteed critical hits on the target for 20 seconds. Landing hits on the target also deals damage to nearby enemies.

Frugal Witchcraft

Perk

Defeating an enemy with a witchcraft ability restores health based on the ability's HP cost.

Aether Cascade

Ultimate

Gain +20% witchcraft ability damage based on the number of witchcraft abilities used, up to 100% (resets after battle).

Do yourself a favor and unlock Mercurial Fervour as your first witchcraft skill — it'll make exploration far more fun. Three or four Forbidden Sigils upgrades are necessary if you'd like to use more witchcraft abilities, while Aether Flow will help you use them more frequently.

One of the best witchcraft abilities is Soul Stigma, which places a 50% critical chance on a target at max level while also boosting critical damage. The duration is very long (35 seconds), and the effect transfers to another enemy on defeat. Since this ability costs an intimidating 35% HP, it's best to pair it with Unholy Vitality, so you'll immediately regain your health. From upgrade level 3 onward, Cycle of Ruin is also a great match for Soul Stigma, as the latter's critical hits will extend its own duration.

Instead of Soul Stigma, you can also use Ravenous Flock, which grants guaranteed critical hits on a target while also dealing area-of-effect damage. Like Soul Stigma, this ability works nicely with Unholy Vitality and Cycle of Ruin. Ravenous Flock consumes 40% HP, but since you'll be targeting several enemies at once, the Frugal Witchcraft perk can help you restore it.

Aether Cascade is the best ultimate, even though witchcraft abilities tend to have a long cooldown time. You may not achieve +100% damage in regular skirmishes, but it can be a game-changer during boss battles.

Best vampirism skills in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Name

Type

Effect

Shapeshift

Ability

Shapeshift into a wolf and gain haste while exploring.

Endless Hunger

Perk

Increases the number of health segments (one per level).

Vrakhiri Might

Perk

Increases the number of vampirism ability slots (one per level).

Scarlet Shield

Ability

Regenerate health after a perfect block.

Crimson Rush

Ability

Increase the damage of active abilities, based on your current HP.

Shred

Ability

Increases bleed chance and bleed damage.

Blood Surge

Ability

Deals area-of-effect damage by exploding the target. If it's a boss, deal massive single-target damage instead.

Sanguine Renewal

Ultimate

Voracious Bite resets all active ability cooldowns.

Before you do anything else, unlock the movement skill Shapeshift, which allows you to travel much faster. Since many vampirism abilities drain some HP, it's wise to pour some points in Endless Hunger. You will also require Vrakhiri Might upgrades to equip more vampirism abilities.

If you'd like to become immortal for real, get the Scarlet Shield ability. Every time you land a perfect block, you'll recover health, which means you'll be recovering HP every few seconds. You may not need it, but pour some extra skill points into Scarlet Shield for even more HP recovery. This ability pairs well with Crimson Rush, which boosts your active ability damage based on your HP.

Whereas Scarlet Shield is a perfect match for the recommended block-based swordmastery skills (see swordmastery), Shred is the perfect match for the swordmastery tree's Artery Strike attack, as it inflicts bleed on your enemies. If you'd like to get an equally powerful vampirism attack, go for Blood Surge.

You don't have to upgrade Voracious Bite (a mandatory ability) unless you need more HP recovery, but be sure to use it often in combination with the Sanguine Renewal ultimate ability; it will reset all ability cooldowns whenever you use Voracious Bite.
