Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series has become quintessential fantasy reading ever since the original Era 1 novels debuted in 2006, introducing readers to the ash-covered Final Empire and one of the genre's most inventive magic systems, Allomancy. The first trilogy consists of The Final Empire (2006), The Well of Ascension (2007), and The Hero of Ages (2008), telling a complete story centered on Vin, Kelsier, and the fate of Scadrial.

Rather than continuing directly afterward, Sanderson surprised fans by expanding the world through distinct "Eras," with each taking place hundreds of years later and exploring a different technological age. Era 2 began with The Alloy of Law (2011), followed by Shadows of Self (2015), The Bands of Mourning (2016), and The Lost Metal (2022), blending classic fantasy with frontier and detective elements. Together, both Eras showcase how Scadrial evolves across generations while remaining deeply connected through the wider Cosmere.

Now, Sanderson's iconic Mistborn saga officially returns to Era 2 in 2026 with an exciting new release, kicking off the start of a bold new chapter for fans of the franchise and the expanded Cosmere universe (via Dragonsteel Books).

Mistborn: Legacy is an official new upcoming campaign book for the Mistborn RPG that's slated for November this year, and one that will attempt to combine both Eras of the Mistborn universe with pretty clever mechanics. According to Dragonsteel, "character options are marked with a specific 'Era 2' tag in bright orange if they touch on gunpowder, cadmium, bendalloy, or any of the other conventions that were added after the original trilogy."

Players will also be able to immerse themselves in both eras in previously impossible ways, where actions you take in the past will have a direct and tangible impact on future events. The conflict will "[culminate] in a clash against the evil noble faction 'The Gilded Few,' who also served as antagonists" in previous Mistborn RPG adventures. "The tone of this book fits the dark times experienced on Scadrial, with horror and hemalurgy playing a significant role."

The Mistborn: Legacy campaign is available for pre-order now via Saga Concepts and other select retailers, available for right around $45 USD. Players can also pre-order the Mistborn Handbook, Mistborn World Guide, and the Mistborn Starter Set as well, all slated to arrive in November 2026.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the Stormlight RPG yet, now is the perfect time, as the upcoming Mistborn books are fully compatible with the existing ruleset. That means players will be able to create crossover adventures spanning Roshar and Scadrial, opening the door for Surgebinders to wield their powers on Scadrial or for Mistborn to venture onto Roshar for the first time.
