Supergirl ditches her iconic blue, red, and yellow costume for a brand-new blue-and-black look. And the best part may be that Kal-El is following his cousin’s lead, trading in the Superman "S" for the iconic Nightwing suit.

Fans don’t need to panic. It’s not the main-universe Superman or even the main-universe Supergirl who are ditching their character-defining suits for new looks. This costume shake-up is slated to take place in one of DC’s Elseworlds titles, writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, and artist Rod Reis’ Supergirl: Survive.

Like other Elseworlds titles, Supergirl: Survive presents a story set in an alternate universe separate from DC’s main continuity. In this universe, Kara and an infant Kal escape Krypton together aboard the same spaceship rather than in separate ships. However, their spacecraft is knocked off course, sending them far from Earth and forcing them to contend with a galaxy desperate to exploit Krypton’s last two Kryptonians.

While most fans think of Dick Grayson when they hear Nightwing, fans should remember that Dick’s codename was inspired by the Kryptonian legend of the vigilante. Hence, Nightwing is of Kryptonian origin.

So far, three issues of the series have been released, and now DC has finally dropped the official solicitation for Supergirl: Survive #5, arriving November 4, 2026. The solicitation teases an epic new Supergirl costume, along with a toddler Kal-El rocking a Nightwing suit.

The main cover by Rod Reis, along with two variant covers by artists Taurin Clarke and Karen S. Darboe, tease Kara and Kal’s new costumes. So far in the series, we’ve seen Kara wear a zip-up Nightwing hoodie and a Blue Lantern suit during her brief time as a Corps member. Now, though, the covers for Supergirl: Survive #5 reveal that Kara may finally be entering her Supergirl era in this series, as she dons a black-and-blue suit featuring a black “S” shield on the chest.

At present, we don’t know what has prompted the costume change, but we do know from the synopsis for issue #5 that Kara and Kal will be entering the infamous Phantom Zone: “Kara and Kal's journey to Earth has been waylaid by entry to an interdimensional wasteland filled with phantoms of their past, and the one thing standing in their way...is Zod.” It will be interesting to see if these suits offer any protection and where the cousins acquired them, given that they are essentially on the run.

There are still plenty of unknowns surrounding Kara’s black-and-blue Supergirl suit and Kal’s Nightwing outfit, yet one thing is clear: these looks are 10/10 badass. Kara’s suit is a full-body design with clunky boots and red knee pads, while Kal wears tactical pants, a Nightwing shirt, clunky boots that match Kara’s, a puffer vest, and red gloves. These costumes mark two of the most radical looks in each character’s history, particularly because they are such a steep departure from their typical appearances.

While these street-casual looks are undoubtedly epic, they’re also exceptionally cute, given that Kara is matching with a toddler Kal. The outfits are fun, but the main takeaway fans should have from this series is that it’s one of the most epic reimaginings of Supergirl and Superman’s relationship in comics, with the costumes somewhat acting as a visual marker of that change.

Supergirl: Survive #5 from DC Comics will be available to read on November 4, 2026!
