Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, is one of the most skilled assassins in the DC Comics Universe. Part of this stems from the superpowers he gained when he was injected with a super soldier serum while serving in the military. It boosted his physical and mental abilities, as well as gave him a healing factor that slows his aging, makes him resistant to poison, and allows him to recover from all non-fatal injuries.

Even without these powers, Deathstroke is a force to be reckoned with. Before the serum, he’d already mastered various forms of hand-to-hand combat and martial arts, and was also proficient in various types of firearms and bladed weapons. Slade spares no expense when it comes to being properly armed, and his orange-and-black costume is packed with gear and technology that make it easier for him to carry out his contract work or cause trouble as a supervillain.

However, the events of Slade’s latest solo title, Deathstroke: The Terminator, have required him to change his threads. His traditional suit is gone, and now he’s donned a low-tech costume that makes it harder for him to strike fear into adversaries at first glance.

Adeline Kane, Slade’s ex-wife, has been making his life hell in Deathstroke: The Terminator, from stealing his fortune and killing his best friend Wintergreen, to staining his reputation as a mercenary and nearly killing his daughter Rose. She even destroyed his Deathstroke suit, but that doesn’t mean that Slade is carrying out his activities dressed as a civilian now. In Deathstroke: The Terminator #8, he’s shown wearing an orange and black hoodie and loose-fitting ski mask.

Unfortunately, this get-up isn’t enough to intimidate the guy Slade tracks down who cut in front of him in line at a gas station, then slashed his tires when Slade pointed out how rude he was being. Still, when it comes to this character, clothes don’t maketh the man. This street tough soon learns what happens when you insult Slade and point a gun in his face. The man is quickly disposed of by the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest assassin” at one of his lowest lows.

Slade Wilson’s Low-Tech Deathstroke Turn Comes Alongside Some Big Twists

While Adeline systematically dismantling Slade’s life has chiefly been driven by revenge, she’s also added insult to injury by declaring herself as the new Deathstroke. Needless to say that Slade won’t take kindly to that, and there will surely come a point when he reclaims what she took from him. For now, though, the hoodied Slade, with his more limited resources, is keeping busy with a surprising new ally and a shocking captive.

In the final page of Deathstroke: The Terminator #8, the titular protagonist is shown communicating with Ray Palmer, a.k.a. The Atom. Ray has been acting paranoid in the pages of Justice League Unlimited recently, believing that one of the superhero team’s members is secretly working for Darkseid, but no one believes him. While it’s unclear whether his communications with Slade is connected to what’s happening in that other title, the even bigger reveal is that Slade discovers a Green Lantern locked in the trunk of a car.

Judging by the feet, this is Vath-Sarn, who hails from the planet Rann and received a leg transplant from his fellow Green Lantern Corps member Isamot Kol, who can regrow his own limbs. Whatever events resulted in Vath ending up in that trunk, it won’t take long for him to get mixed up in Slade’s affairs. In the solicitation for December’s Deathstroke: The Terminator #10, it’s teased that a Green Lantern will bring to light the “shady underworld business” that Slade has gotten mixed up in, much to his displeasure.

Deathstroke: The Terminator #8 is now available from DC Comics.
