Derms Say This Summer Skincare Reset Is Essential

Your heavy winter and spring skincare product routine could be ruining your summer and fall flawless skin success. If you want fresh, dewy, poreless skin, you're going to have to make some swaps that work with the humidity and heat. But what are the best products to leave behind in the hotter months, and which products should we start using?
We have a lot of questions, so we asked Dr. Joshua Zeichner, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC, to answer every single one.
Whether your normally dry skin gets oily in the heat or you have sensitive acne-prone skin and you're nervous to switch it up, we've got you covered. So, if you've always wondered what your summer skincare routine should look like (hint: it's lighter than you think!), keep scrolling.
- Switch your hydrating cream cleanser for a foam cleanser: Celimax The Real Noni Bubble Foam Face Cleanser
- Use a lightweight moisturizer, instead of a heavy one: Bubble Skincare Slam Dunk Moisturizer
- Use a face mist for an on-the-go refresh: Bubble Cosmic Rain Hydrating Face Mist & Neutrogena Evenly Clear Spray
Should You Change Your Skincare Routine Between Seasons?
According to Dr. Zeichner, you don't technically have to change anything in your skincare routine. There are no specific rules for which products to leave behind and which ones to pick up. Yet, you do have to know what works best for your skin type and the weather. That might mean buying new products or using the same products, but in different amounts.
"The truth is that you can continue your skincare products from one season to another, but you may need to take special precautions based on the weather and your particular skin type or skin needs," he told E!.
What Skincare Products Should I Avoid During Summer?
If there's one product you need to be careful of during the summer, it's retinol. Its active cell renewal can be detrimental to your skin when exposed to too much sun. That also can be said for other chemical exfoliators, like AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C. Still, you don't need to stop them altogether. Simply be careful and remember to always wear sunscreen.
"While some people discontinue the use of topical retinoids in the summer because of potential sun sensitivity, I believe that they can be used all year-round," Dr. Zeichner told E!. "In the summertime, you just need to be especially careful about wearing sunscreen and protecting yourself from the sun if you are using topical retinoids."
What Skincare Products Should We Use More of During The Summer?
If you need to switch out products from your skincare routine this summer, Dr. Zeichner recommends opting for a new cleanser and moisturizer. Oh, and don't forget the sunscreen! If your skin gets oilier in the heat, he says to forget the hydrating cleanser and pick up a new foaming one.
"Hydrating cleansers may not be enough to remove excess oil in the summer months. If you’re acne-prone, consider using a cleanser that contains salicylic acid in the summertime," he said. "Think of it as a pipe cleaner that helps keep the pores clear and prevents blockages that lead to pimples"
For moisturizer, don't use the same one you use during the winter. Instead, choose a moisturizer with a lightweight, gel-like formula that still hydrates without the heavy texture. "Heavier creams or balms may weigh down the skin during more humid months," Dr. Zeichner said.
The last thing? You need sunscreen this summer. Dr. Zeichner suggested wearing SPF on a daily basis, regardless of the sun's UV rays, but especially during the hotter months. "If you use only one product this summer, it should be sunscreen. UV light exposure from the sun is the single largest factor that leads to both premature aging and skin cancers," he told E!.
