Taylor Sheridan established that Heaven exists in the Yellowstone universe, but only the Duttons in the prequels received a reward in the afterlife. Since debuting in 2018, Yellowstone's five seasons have depicted the violent lives of the Dutton family, who fought and died for their claim to the unspoiled wilds of Montana they dubbed the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Yellowstone spawned two prequels, 1883 and 1923. 1883 showed that violence and death were tenets of the first generation of the Dutton family in the United States, following them on the Oregon Trail across the country before the Duttons settled in Montana. In 1923, the Duttons waged a war for their ranch while Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) crossed the ocean from Africa to defend his family.

Many Duttons have died throughout Yellowstone, starting with Lee (Dave Annable), the first son of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner), in Yellowstone's series premiere. As a story about seven generations of the Duttons, the characters in 1883 and 1923 are long dead during the flagship series' present day. While there is an afterlife in Yellowstone, audiences have only seen three Duttons receive their just reward.

Yellowstone’s Prequels Prove Heaven Exists For The Duttons

In Yellowstone, "God is the land," but Heaven exists. 1883 was narrated by its main character, Elsa Dutton (Isabel May), who survived the Oregon Trail long enough to be laid to rest in Montana, where the Duttons settled permanently. Through Elsa's narration, Taylor Sheridan took Yellowstone to a metaphysical level, sharing the young heroine's philosophical view of the United States and her fusion of her European upbringing and acceptance of Native American spiritualism.

Sheridan ended 1883 boldly and upliftingly by showing Elsa in Heaven, which she says is different for each person. For the spirited Dutton daughter who was taken too young, Heaven is the unspoiled frontier devoid of storms and tragedy, where Elsa can ride freely to infinity alongside her Native husband. Elsa became the patron saint of the Duttons who would watch over the next generations.

1923 season 2 ended with the Prohibition-era Duttons' most tragic relationship receiving a Heavenly reward. After his death in 1969, Spencer Dutton arrived in Heaven in the bloom of his youth to find his wife, Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer), waiting for him. In their perfect reunion, Spencer and Alex shared a dance at a ball, enjoying the peace and happiness that Taylor Sheridan denied them in life.

Elsa, Alex, and Spencer are the only Duttons that the Yellowstone saga has shown in Heaven. In each instance, they were deserving of more from the world and received their hearts' desire after their deaths. Most other Duttons suffered in life throughout Yellowstone, and it's unclear if they also went to a blissful afterlife. Perhaps Alex, Spencer, and Elsa are special among the Duttons.

Did John Dutton Go To Heaven In Yellowstone?

John Dutton summer camp in Yellowstone

When Kevin Costner exited Yellowstone midway through filming the fifth and final season, Taylor Sheridan killed off the show's main character, John Dutton. Although Elsa Dutton narrated part of Yellowstone's series finale, as the Broken Rock tribe reclaimed their land from the Duttons, there was no indication that John went to Heaven like his ancestors.

The decisions John made may have damned his soul.

John Dutton was a sad and tragic figure, but he was also burdened with making unconscionable choices to honor his vow and protect his family's ranch. John killed his share of enemies, just as Spencer Dutton did, but the decisions John made may have damned his soul. John Dutton was assassinated, but his soul may not have been reunited with his beloved wife, Evelyn (Gretchen Mol).

Or maybe John Dutton did go to the afterlife, and Sheridan didn't depict it because he no longer had Costner. Instead, John Dutton has become a source of inspiration for his daughter, Beth (Kelly Reilly), and son-in-law, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), in Dutton Ranch. The strength Beth and Rip derive from John's memory may be his afterlife now that the Duttons' Yellowstone Ranch is no more.

The closest John Dutton got to Heaven was in Yellowstone season 3, when John was "retired" and enjoying summer camp. John was at peace during these idle days, surrounded by his family, loyal ranch hands, and soaking up being a role model to his grandson, Tate (Brecken Merrill). Perhaps John's Heaven is summer camp, reunited with his wife, and waiting for their children to join them someday.
