Austin Manchester is a writer and editor living in New York City. At Polygon, he covers gaming and entertainment news, reviews new video games, interviews behind-the-scenes talent, and more. He enjoys discovering hidden gems and sharing them with Polygon's audience. Previously, he was the gaming editor for AIPT Comics and has written for other outlets like XDA, How-To Geek, and The List.

He enjoys soulslikes, character-driven RPGs, and third-person shooters plucked straight out of the Xbox 360 era. He also likes to flex his non-video game nerdy knowledge sometimes, whether that's explaining who's who in the new Wolverine game or recommending a comic book series about a sentient sword.

The Epic Games Store is offering two great free PC games this week. For a limited time, you can grab one of the most influential games around, as well as a mysterious visual novel at no charge.

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster

System Shock 2 is an all-time great game, and a highly influential immersive sim. Co-developer Irrational Games laid a foundation in 1999 it would build on with BioShock in 2007. System Shock 2 combines elements of first-person shooters, survival horror, and RPGs as players fight their way through the halls of a spaceship overrun by monsters and robots. The anniversary edition adds cross-play co-op, visual upgrades, and mod support.

Buried Stars

Buried Stars is a locked-room murder mystery, except that the locked room is a pile of rubble. A studio collapses during a live broadcast of a reality show, trapping the contestants and crew. They have to solve a murder while trying to escape from the wreckage, using social media to communicate with the outside world and gather clues. Buried Stars has branching paths and different endings, encouraging multiple playthroughs.

If System Shock 2 and Buried Stars catch your eye, all you need to do is log in to the Epic Games Store and claim them. The games will be free until Thursday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. EDT.
