Firefly Aerospace (FLY) Stock Jumps 6% on Lunar AI Partnership with Starcloud
Key Points
- Firefly Aerospace (FLY) shares jumped approximately 6% on Wednesday.
- Starcloud selected Firefly for a commercial payload agreement.
- The partnership will test Starcloud’s SC-1L AI processor in lunar orbit.
- Firefly’s Elytra orbital platform will carry the computing payload.
- The demonstration flight is scheduled for 2028 or later.
Firefly Aerospace (FLY) shares surged approximately 6% during Wednesday’s morning trading session. The rally came after the space company announced a commercial partnership with Starcloud to demonstrate artificial intelligence computing capabilities in lunar orbit.
This agreement expands Firefly’s revenue streams beyond its core lunar landing and transport operations. The Starcloud AI computing system will be carried as a payload on Firefly’s Elytra orbital platform.
With a launch window opening no sooner than 2028, the mission aims to validate technology that could one day enable data processing centers positioned near lunar space.
During the mission, Starcloud’s SC-1L processing unit will collect information from Firefly’s Solux navigation system. The processor will then execute AI computations while orbiting the Moon before transmitting analyzed data back to ground stations on Earth.
Starcloud has previously demonstrated comparable AI processing capabilities aboard satellites in low Earth orbit. This upcoming mission extends that technological approach dramatically farther, reaching lunar distances.
Mission Architecture and Integration
The Starcloud computing payload will be integrated into Firefly’s third lunar expedition. Before hosting the AI demonstration, Elytra will serve dual functions as both a transport vehicle and communications relay platform for the company’s Blue Ghost lunar lander.
Blue Ghost is scheduled to land at the Gruithuisen Domes region on the lunar surface. The mission operates under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.
Following completion of the lander support mission, Firefly intends to maintain Elytra in lunar orbit for up to five years. Throughout this extended operational period, the platform would accommodate additional commercial and government payloads while conducting ongoing imaging operations.
According to Ezra Feilden, Starcloud’s cofounder and chief technology officer, the company has successfully demonstrated both inference and training of AI models on GPU hardware in low Earth orbit. The objective now focuses on extending those verified capabilities to the lunar orbital environment.
Firefly’s Solux vision technology enables spacecraft to determine their position and navigate without external guidance. This autonomous capability becomes critical in deep space environments beyond the reach of GPS satellite signals.
Expanding Lunar Infrastructure Services
Beyond the Starcloud partnership, Firefly continues developing its Ocula lunar observation service. This program focuses on surface mapping capabilities, mineral identification, and reconnaissance operations.
The company recently announced another collaboration with NVIDIA. This arrangement will utilize an NVIDIA Jetson computing module aboard Elytra to process Ocula imaging data before transmission across the approximately 240,000-mile distance to Earth.
By processing and compressing data before downlink, this approach could significantly improve operational efficiency and reduce transmission times. The solution addresses fundamental challenges inherent in extreme-distance space communications.
The Starcloud partnership represents another commercial application for the Elytra platform as Firefly works toward establishing persistent infrastructure in cislunar space. This mission will utilize the second Elytra vehicle scheduled for lunar orbit deployment.
Firefly’s initial Elytra platform is planned for launch alongside Blue Ghost Mission 2. That deployment targets a 2027 launch window, placing it one year before the scheduled Starcloud demonstration flight.
