Henry Cavill Sci-Fi Thriller Officially Delayed To Avoid GTA 6

Having just watched the Netflix showcase of Grand Theft Auto VI, it comes as no surprise that game publishers are actively avoiding its release window. Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game of the decade and avoiding November 19, 2026, is a smart move for Rockstar's competitors. GTA demands the spotlight and other games will simply be overshadowed by Jason and Lucia's adventure. One such game trying to avoid the black hole stars none other than the beloved Henry Cavill.

Having already been the Man of Steel and conquering Novigrad, it looks like Henry Cavill has turned his attention skywards. His latest gaming role will see him trying to dominate space in an epic sci-fi adventure. But, thanks to a letter from the Chairperson, we've now learned that the upcoming space adventure Squadron 42, will miss out on a Q4 release in 2026. Chris Roberts went on to explain that Squadron 42 and, indeed, the Star Citizen universe were actively avoiding clashing with Grand Theft Auto VI.

He went on to explain the following:

At CitizenCon 2024 we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE. But much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had twelve years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it (we started Squadron 42 development in 2014 as 2013 was opening studios, hiring people and getting the Hangar module out for Star Citizen) launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA6. While GTA6 isn’t launching on PC this November, pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it, not leaving a lot of room for other coverage.

This will come as no shock to anyone who has seen the recent Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on Netflix. The game looks absolutely astonishing, taking all the best elements of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V and presenting it in a huge sandbox that looks like an absolute joy to explore. Grand Theft Auto VI is set to be the biggest game of a generation and getting out of its wise is a wise move for Squadron 42 and all others games too, in fact.

Squadron 42 does seem to be ready to launch though, as the team have spent the last few years polishing an already feature-complete game. With a star-studded cast including Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, Gillian Anderson and Gary Oldman to name but a few, the game is shaping up to grab attention once it releases. The spiritual successor to Wing Commander is now set to release in Q2 of 2027 and with a cast of Hollywood A-listers, it looks likely to become an epic space adventure complete with aerial combat, first person action and FPS puzzle sections to tackle.

Hopefully, between now and Q2 of 2027, we'll get more glimpses at gameplay in Squadron 42 to see if it can live up to the hype. If it can compete with the likes of Mass Effect and Starfield, then we may be in for a treat long after we've rolled credits on Grand Theft Auto VI. An epic space opera with an A-list cast of characters... sign me up! Who knows, it might even surpass the recent Star Wars Zero Company with its stellar reviews. With Henry Cavill attached, anything is possible.
