Following the release of Enola Holmes 3, one star has opened up about Henry Cavill’s future as Sherlock Holmes.
Though Millie Bobby Brown is front and center playing the title character of the Enola Holmes film series, Cavill’s portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character nonetheless plays a key supporting role in these movies. Cavill’s run as Sherlock continues in Enola Holmes 3, the first of the best movies coming to Netflix in July. Beyond that, Himesh Patel, another member of the sequel’s cast, has thoughts on where things could go next for the famed detective.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, Patel, who appears as Dr. John Watson in Enola Holmes 3 following his cameo in the Enola Holmes 2 ending, was asked what he’d like to do next in this franchise opposite Cavill. Patel expressed interest in giving audiences a “classic Sherlock-Watson story,” saying:
I would just want to spend more time with him. I’d love to do a classic Sherlock-Watson story with him. That’d be a lot of fun. I think he’s a fantastic actor. He seems like a lovely guy in the time I’ve spent with him. But what he’s done with what you see of Sherlock in this movie is really special, and I really would love to spend more time with Henry and tell a thrilling story.
Holmes and Watson are one of literature’s most famous duos, with past actor pairings for the characters including Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. However, Watson wasn’t present in the first Enola Holmes movie, with Sherlock instead trading witty repartee with his and Enola’s brother, Sam Claflin’s Mycroft Holmes. Then, in Enola Holmes 2, the titular character recognized that her brother needed a friend, so she arranged for Watson to show up at 221 Baker St. to meet with Sherlock about becoming his flatmate.
Though Cavill’s Sherlock and Patel’s Watson do share some screen time together in Enola Holmes 3, they’re ultimately separated for most of it. The story sees Sherlock being kidnapped on the eve of Enola’s wedding to Louis Partridge’s Lord Tewkesbury. Enola and Watson subsequently team up to rescue the detective. Other Enola Holmes 3 cast members include Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Moriarty, Jason Watkins as Brigadier Sampson, and Hattie Morahan as Lady Tewkesbury.
Directed by Philip Barantini and written by Jack Thorne, the new movie has earned a predominantly positive critical reception. ScreenRant’s Enola Holmes 3 review gave it a more mixed reaction, saying that the movie “begins to demonstrate the limits of the series' premise, especially as it wades deeper and deeper into the Sherlock mythos.” There’s been no announcement yet about whether Enola Holmes 4 or a Sherlock/Watson-focused spinoff will be made.
With Enola Holmes 3 now available to watch on Netflix, Henry Cavill will next be seen in the live-action Voltron movie, which is expected to be released in 2027. The lineup of upcoming Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows includes Young Sherlock season 2 happening at Prime Video, Sky Television’s The Death of Sherlock Holmes, and Former Prodigy Media's Moriarty Rising: A Sherlock Holmes Tale.
