If you can't get enough of record-breaking Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, his newest TV series is based on an '80s Sega game, and is out now

Matthew Rhys is having quite a moment. The actor cleaned up at the Emmys on Monday, making history by becoming the first man to win two Emmys for a leading role on the same night (for comedy series Widow's Bay and limited series The Beast in Me).

And in doing that, he actually set another record by becoming the only person to receive a lead actor Emmy for all three genres—he'd already won one for drama series The Americans back in 2018.

And his moment continues: Rhys actually has yet another new show out this week. Golden Axe is an animated comedy based on the Golden Axe video game series made by Sega way back in 1989. All 10 episodes are streaming now on Paramount+.

Joining Rhys, who plays dwarf warrior Gilius Thunderhead, is Danny Pudi (of Community and Mythic Quest) and Liam McIntyre (he played JD Fenix in Gears of War 4). Improv comedy fans will also be thrilled to hear the voice of Lisa Gilroy, playing sorceress Tyris, and Cart Tart, who voices… let me see if I've got this right… a humanoid panther.

"In an homage to Sega's iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won't seem to stay dead," says Paramount+. "Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all."

I'm a fan of just about the entire cast, and while I haven't seen it yet—and in fact only heard about the show for the first time today, and I've never played the games, either—I'm gonna check it out.
