John Anderson got the whole world swingin,’ but he has left the party too soon.

The country music star, known for his hits like “Swingin’” and “Straight Tequila Night” has died, his family confirmed. He was 71.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend,” Anderson’s family wrote in an Oct. 21 statement shared to his personal social media accounts. “To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives.”

But Anderson’s family emphasized the Country Hall of Fame singer was “much more” to them.

“He was the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special,” the family wrote. “We are completely heartbroken.”

And while the Grammy nominee’s loved ones find solace in knowing how much Anderson meant to his fans, they will cherish his personal moments with him most.

“His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever,” they added. “Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”

Anderson’s last major appearance occurred only days before his death when he joined many of his fellow country stars to see Tim McGraw, Paul Overstreet and The Stanley Brothers inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Oct. 18.

“We had a great night,” Anderson wrote on Instagram after the ceremony. “Congratulations!”

The “1959” singer rose to fame in the way many country legends did—by a move to Nashville. For him, there was no other choice.

“It’s all I’ve ever done,” Anderson told the Country Hall of Fame. “I had no backup plan.”

Born in Apopka, Florida, in 1954, Anderson made his move to the Athens of the South after he graduated high school in 1972, with the encouragement of his parents—although they had no knowledge of the scene. By 1976, when he was just 22, he signed his first record deal with Warner Bros.

While he had plenty of hits, no song propelled Anderson to fame like “Swingin,’” which earned him Single of the Year and a CMA Horizon Award in 1983. That same year he married Jamie Addikison, with whom he would go on to welcome two daughters.

Shortly thereafter, he cemented himself as a country icon and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024. Anderson released his final studio album, Years, in 2020.

Although he set out to spend his life playing country music, Anderson never imagined becoming such an icon—but he didn’t mind fitting into the boots after years of work and dedication.

“I was just wanting to play and sing pretty much at any level that I could,” he told Billboard ahead of his Hall of Fame induction in 2024. “Thankfully, I was blessed.”
