Given the massive success of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, it’s not surprising that a sequel is already in development, and even though it’s nowhere near ready for its release, it’s already a win for the streamer. Netflix has an interesting catalog of original animated movies with different animation styles and tones, such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Klaus, and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. The platform’s biggest hit to date in that field, however, is 2025’s KPop Demon Hunters.

KPop Demon Hunters brings together fantasy, action, and music through its main characters: the K-pop girl group Huntrix, formed by Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Not only are they worldwide sensations, but they are also the latest demon hunters, who, with their singing voices, create a magical barrier against demons called the Honmoon. However, their mission takes a turn with the sudden appearance of boy band Saja Boys, who are actually demons in disguise.

KPop Demon Hunters was a massive success, breaking records, winning various awards (including the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song), and staying in Netflix’s Top 10 for over a year. Although it took a while to be confirmed, KPop Demon Hunters is getting a sequel, which might not arrive as soon as many would like, but it will surely be worth the wait. Even better, KPop Demon Hunters 2 is already a huge win for Netflix, despite having to overcome some big challenges.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Will Have A Different Release Strategy

Despite being one of the biggest and most successful streaming platforms, and one that has stood out for its original content, Netflix still lacks when it comes to promoting its original works. Many great Netflix originals have flown under the radar due to poor marketing, stopping them from finding their audience, while others were lucky enough to become well-known through word-of-mouth, recommendations, or moments that went viral.

KPop Demon Hunters falls into the latter category, as it didn’t get any special marketing, just the standard promotional material that Netflix’s original movies usually get. This speaks volumes about the quality and impact of KPop Demon Hunters, as it got where it is with minimal marketing and no merch, which is unusual for an animated movie, but not for one made for streaming. In fact, KPop Demon Hunters got more support after its success on the platform, with a second theatrical release months after its original limited run.

Given the success of KPop Demon Hunters (which, a year later, still hasn’t completely died down), the sequel will definitely have to be treated differently. KPop Demon Hunters 2 has been teased to be released in 2029, with the possibility of not being finished by then, but regardless of when it will arrive, it will have to have a different release strategy than the first movie.

There’s now a loyal fanbase and wider audience for KPop Demon Hunters than when it was released on Netflix, and while, on one hand, that means the sequel won’t need heavy marketing to attract an audience, on the other hand, it’s a project that needs much better marketing support. KPop Demon Hunters 2 will be a massive event, and it will surely get a limited theatrical run along with its release on Netflix, paired with more promotional material than the first movie.

It will be strange if Netflix doesn’t seize the excitement and anticipation around KPop Demon Hunters 2 and the success of the first movie when the sequel is ready to be released, so fans of Huntrix and their unique world can expect merch and a lot more promotional material when the time comes.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Is Already Bigger Than The First Movie

Despite KPop Demon Hunters 2 being in early development and thus plot details being currently unknown, the sequel is already bigger than the first movie. KPop Demon Hunters took Huntrix into a big and complex adventure, as they not only had to carry on with their role as demon hunters and take down the Saja Boys, but they also struggled with their identity, mission, and place in the world, particularly Rumi.

KPop Demon Hunters had exciting action scenes, catchy songs, funny moments, and some deep ones too, making it a very complete cinematic experience (in addition to its amazing animation, tone, and concept). KPop Demon Hunters set the bar high for its sequel, pushing it to be bigger so it can live up to expectations, maintain its audience, bring in new viewers, and remain relevant – and being bigger goes beyond the marketing campaign it will need.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 should go bigger in its story, with higher stakes, more catchy songs, and going deeper into the stories of the main characters, especially Mira and Zoey, as the first movie focused more on Rumi. KPop Demon Hunters 2 also needs a bigger villain, either Gwi-Ma or someone else, and a more elaborate mission for Huntrix that doesn’t end up repeating the first movie (which is a common mistake in animated sequels).

KPop Demon Hunters 2 Still Has To Overcome Huge Challenges

Being bigger than its first movie also brings huge challenges for KPop Demon Hunters 2. First off, and as mentioned above, KPop Demon Hunters 2 has to be careful not to repeat the story of the first movie with just a couple of changes, while, at the same time, it must stay true to the essence of this world. Obviously, Huntrix has to hunt demons (it’s in the title, after all), but the specifics of it must be different.

Another huge challenge KPop Demon Hunters 2 is facing is its villain. At the end of KPop Demon Hunters, Gwi-Ma was defeated but not killed, while Jinu sacrificed himself, but it was implied through the presence of his cat and crow companions that he somehow survived. However, if Jinu returns, he wouldn’t be a villain as he already had his redemption, and Gwi-Ma gaining force again could end up repeating the first movie’s story.

KPop Demon Hunters also needs new songs, especially catchy ones, which is a very complicated challenge as “Golden” set the bar too high. The combination of a new story true to the essence of the world of KPop Demon Hunters, a well-developed villain, and a killer soundtrack will further boost KPop Demon Hunters 2’s success, and it’s perfectly understandable why the sequel will take so long to arrive.
