  • Strategic GTN collaboration enables blockchain-based trading access to global equity markets.

The parent company of Kraken, Payward, has announced a significant international expansion of its xStocks platform, moving beyond American equities to incorporate tokenized shares from Hong Kong. Working alongside GTN, the firm is setting its sights on additional markets including the United Kingdom, European Union nations, and South Korea, contingent upon receiving necessary regulatory permissions. This strategic move represents a major step in delivering blockchain-enabled access to conventional financial instruments across global markets.

International Expansion Marks New Phase for xStocks

Payward has revealed its strategy to broaden the xStocks ecosystem by incorporating tokenized shares from Hong Kong’s stock exchange, facilitated through a partnership with investment infrastructure specialist GTN. The ambitious expansion blueprint encompasses securities from the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and South Korea. Each market entry will require approval from local financial regulators before implementation.

This international push represents a significant departure from xStocks’ initial concentration on American-listed securities and exchange-traded funds. The initiative seeks to deliver blockchain-powered access to a more diverse portfolio of publicly traded corporations worldwide. Furthermore, Payward has expressed intentions to broaden tokenization capabilities into alternative asset categories beyond traditional equities.

The selection of GTN as a partner provides xStocks with access to execution services, custody solutions, and recordkeeping infrastructure for the securities underpinning these tokenized instruments. GTN’s established network spans more than 90 international financial markets. Following regulatory authorization, the platform will also become available to institutional investors.

Building a Comprehensive Tokenized Securities Infrastructure

xStocks emerged from a collaborative effort between Kraken and Backed, designed to provide tokenized representation of United States stocks and exchange-traded funds. Each digital token corresponds to actual shares maintained in regulatory-compliant custody arrangements. The blockchain infrastructure enables continuous transfer and trading capabilities throughout the day.

Initially deployed on Solana’s blockchain network, the platform debuted with 60 tokenized American securities and ETFs. The ecosystem has since experienced substantial growth, now encompassing nearly 500 tokenized instruments. According to Payward’s data, xStocks has attracted over 100 ecosystem collaborators, facilitated more than $35 billion in transaction volume, and accumulated nearly 200,000 token holders.

Future development plans include incorporating commodities, pre-IPO investment opportunities, and specialized execution tools designed for institutional participants. Payward aims to integrate collateral functionality and enhance round-the-clock liquidity provision. These enhancements will significantly broaden blockchain-facilitated access beyond conventional publicly traded equities.

Tokenized Securities Attract Mainstream Financial Attention

Payward’s international expansion coincides with increasing adoption of tokenized securities throughout financial markets. Robinhood recently extended its tokenized equity offerings beyond its European customer base. Coinbase has publicly announced intentions to launch blockchain-based stock token products.

Established market infrastructure operators have likewise accelerated their tokenization initiatives over the past twelve months. DTCC has conducted testing of systems designed to support tokenized securities within current market frameworks. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange have both progressed separate blockchain-oriented market development programs.

Industry analysts anticipate tokenization will enhance settlement processes and enable continuous trading across international time zones. Citi projects the tokenized securities market could achieve a valuation of $5.5 trillion by 2030. Within this forecast, tokenized equities are expected to represent approximately $2.6 trillion, underscoring the expanding significance of platforms like xStocks and comparable blockchain-based solutions in democratizing access to international financial markets.
