The Lord of the Rings will likely always hold onto its crown as the greatest fantasy franchise in the history of a genre that it largely created in modern terms. Tolkien's world has an unrivaled depth, and that makes it the best place to tell all sorts of stories in all sorts of different mediums and adaptations.

Happily, we've enjoyed a lot of those over the years, from the Peter Jackson trilogy that continues to tie millions of fans together, to a myriad of video games that touch on all sorts of different portions of the lore. It also has a strong history in the tabletop and board game genres, where it continues to see regular releases.

Now, another adaptation is on the way, and it could be one of the best in recent years.

Over on Kickstarter, you should be able to find the campaign for The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, a resurrection of the beloved The Queen’s Gambit, all within the confines of the world Tolkien created. It features four battlefields centered around the Battle of Pelennor Fields and Mount Doom, and it comes with hundreds of miniatures and models to bring the settings to life.

In sharing a little about what fans can expect from the game, the manufacturer posted the following description: "Restoration Games and Space Cowboys are partnering to revive a beloved classic board game, The Queen’s Gambit – this time set in the world of The Lord of the Rings."

"Like its predecessor, The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit features a sprawling, epic battle across multiple fields of play. The Riders of Rohan clash against hordes of Orcs on Pelennor Fields. The brave Gondorians fend off the forces of Shadow in Minas Tirith. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas maneuver their way through Haradrim on the Great Port at Pelargir to join the fight. And Frodo and Sam navigate the perilous journey through Mordor to the fires of Mount Doom."

"Game design is led by Rob Daviau, the legendary designer and co-founder of Restoration Games. Packed with detailed figures, thrilling decisions, and countless ways to win, this game delivers the ultimate experience for fans of The Lord of the Rings and board gaming alike."

Of course, there's plenty more Lord Of The Rings to come in the next couple of years. A brand-new prequel movie called The Hunt For Gollum will see some familiar faces return, while Amazon's Rings Of Power is coming out with a third season very soon.

If this new set looks like something you could have fun with (and why wouldn't it?), the campaign is still live, though be warned it draws to a close on Tuesday, October 20, so you'll need to move quickly. The base tier for backing comes in at $199, so it is a little pricey, but it should serve as a game that real Lord of the Rings fans will enjoy for a long time.
