Mbappé’s monster season is fueling a meme token frenzy nobody asked for

Kylian Mbappé’s 2025/26 season at Real Madrid has seen him tally approximately 25 goals and 5 assists across 31 La Liga matches. On the international stage, he recently became France’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Olivier Giroud with 58 international goals as of June 2026, a milestone achieved during the ongoing World Cup.

When someone becomes that famous, crypto traders treat them like a ticker symbol. An unauthorized Solana-based meme token called MBAPPE experienced a notable trading surge in early July 2026, timed almost perfectly with Mbappé’s World Cup performances. The token has zero official connection to the player.

This isn’t the first time Mbappé’s name has been weaponized in crypto markets. In 2024, hackers compromised Mbappé’s X (formerly Twitter) account and used it to promote a fraudulent MBAPPE token. The token briefly reached a market cap of $464 million before collapsing.

In 2022, Mbappé became an investor and ambassador for Sorare, a blockchain-based NFT fantasy sports platform. That was a legitimate, disclosed business relationship. There’s a world of difference between investing in that platform and having random Solana tokens launched in your name by anonymous developers.

The $464 million market cap that the fraudulent 2024 MBAPPE token achieved, even briefly, demonstrates how much capital can be mobilized by hype alone. These tokens are almost entirely sentiment-driven, which means their value is a function of attention, not fundamentals. The house edge belongs to whoever launched the token and seeded the initial liquidity pool.
