Shares of Microsoft (MSFT) declined 2.73% Wednesday following the tech giant’s announcement of an expanded strategic alliance with Databricks that secures their collaboration well into the 2030s.

The agreement stipulates that Databricks will migrate its internal operational systems and data analytics infrastructure to Azure Databricks. Additionally, the company will expand deployment of Azure Cobalt, Microsoft’s proprietary Arm-based silicon solution.

Databricks is currently leveraging Azure Cobalt 100 processors. The transition to Cobalt 200 is planned, which Microsoft claims delivers up to 50% enhanced performance while incorporating default memory encryption capabilities.

This hardware investment represents a substantial commitment and demonstrates strong belief in Microsoft’s technological infrastructure development.

The partnership expansion will bring Databricks capabilities more deeply into Microsoft’s entire product portfolio, spanning Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Foundry.

Artificial Intelligence Capabilities Expanding Across Microsoft Ecosystem

Microsoft will embed Databricks’ Genie AI solution and Unity AI Gateway throughout its customer experience. Genie functions as a conversational analytics interface enabling users to access data insights through natural language queries.

“With Databricks Genie and Unity AI Gateway deeply integrated across Microsoft’s products, we’re helping enterprises unify their data and ground AI in business knowledge,” said Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks.

Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business, emphasized that Databricks’ choice to operate its own infrastructure on Azure Databricks “gives customers confidence in a platform proven at enterprise scale.”

The Azure Databricks platform already supports thousands of shared enterprise clients, with notable organizations including Banco Bradesco, Electrolux, SMBC, and Unilever among the adopters.

$188 Billion Valuation Marks Databricks Growth

More than 20,000 organizations worldwide utilize the Databricks platform, representing 70% of Fortune 500 enterprises.

Databricks secured a funding round valuing the company at $188 billion just last week. The financing round is anticipated to finalize during the summer months.

Based in San Francisco, Databricks maintains its position as among the world’s most highly valued privately-held technology companies.

According to Althoff, the extended partnership will enable customers to achieve “greater performance, efficiency, and scale for their most demanding workloads” leveraging Azure Cobalt-powered computing resources.

MSFT stock was trading 2.73% lower at the time the partnership extension was disclosed.
