Minecraft is finally launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 this fall, giving Mojang's blockbuster sandbox game a native version built to take advantage of Nintendo's new hardware and bringing a massive graphics overhaul to the console.

Mojang announced Wednesday that Switch 2 version of Minecraft will feature the Vibrant Visuals graphics update by default, introducing enhanced lighting, volumetric fog, improved water reflections, directional lighting, and more detailed shadows that modernize the game's look without taking away from its classic blocky style. Mojang said the native version is optimized specifically for Switch 2.

Players who already own Minecraft on the original Nintendo Switch won't have to buy the game again. All the details haven't been shared yet, but Mojang is offering an upgrade path to the Switch 2 Edition — so existing owners should be able to purchase the native version at a discounted price or access it through an eligible Minecraft subscription.

The Switch 2 release caps off a busy year for Minecraft, which has continued to evolve through a steady stream of updates and new projects. Vibrant Visuals first debuted as part of the Chase the Skies update, marking one of the game's most significant technical upgrades since its launch.

Mojang has also continued to expand the sandbox with new gameplay features. Its latest game drop adds decorative furniture options, including cushions and beds, giving players more ways to customize homes and build detailed interiors without relying on mods. The additions continue the studio's recent focus on smaller, more frequent content updates instead of large annual releases. And the update led to the development of in-game whoopee cushions, of course.

The Minecraft franchise is also expanding beyond its flagship game. During Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase in June, Mojang and Double Eleven announced Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG. The game is slated to launch next year, introducing new biomes, enemies and cooperative adventures while building on the original's loot-driven gameplay. Another Minecraft movie, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is also in the works with a 2027 release date.

Minecraft is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 27.
