Neighbours is back: Cancelled soap's old episodes get bizarre AI-remake with first installments featuring Margot Robbie

Neighbours is making a comeback with a bizarre AI-fuelled reboot featuring the cancelled soap's biggest stars. 

The iconic Aussie series went off air last year, but fans of the show will have a chance to relive its heyday in new ways. 

Production company Fremantle has partnered with Vertical TV platform RoseBerry, which are using AI to edit storylines that will follow single characters. 

Instead of featuring a whole cast, each episode will focus on just one actor, with Margot Robbie, who played Donna Freedman between 2008 and 2011, the first to get the special treatment. 

The result will be an AI-assisted vertical micro-episode that is made especially for mobile phones, following two storylines starring Robbie. 

The series will begin airing on the micro-drama app, Epis, for which subscription plans cost from AUD $14.99 to $29.99 per week or AUD $49.99 per month. 

A launch date for the project has not yet been announced.  

'Neighbours is an iconic piece of television history and exactly the kind of premium entertainment IP we believe can thrive in the vertical format,' Guy Hameiri, Co-Founder and CEO of RoseBerry Media, told TV Tonight in a statement. 

'This is the first time we've had the opportunity to apply RedSnapper to a long-running soap with such a rich library of characters, storylines and cultural moments, and Fremantle has been a fantastic partner in helping bring that vision to life.'

Neighbours aired its final episode in December 2025 after being axed for a second time, that time by Amazon.

The cancellation notoriously came less than two years after the iconic soap's revival.

The Australian series became a worldwide hit and helped launch the careers of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Guy Pearce. 

The soap, which aired on Channel Ten in Australia, previously came to an end in July 2022, prompting a star-studded finale featuring Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie and a host of returning favourites. 

But just months later Amazon Prime stepped in to save the show, with new episodes beginning in September 2023. 

However, two years later, Amazon confirmed the soap would be axed for good.

An Amazon spokesperson said at the time: 'Neighbours has brought so much joy over the last 40 years to its fanbase globally and in the UK.

'Forty years is an incredible milestone and we are proud that Amazon MGM Studios was able to have a small part of bringing further episodes to Freevee and Prime Video customers over the last two years, spanning over 400 episodes.'

Meanwhile, a source told The Sun: 'Amazon gave Fremantle two years to see if it worked but sadly they just didn't get the viewers.'
