EXCLUSIVE: Netflix's The Diplomat continues to avoid a major streaming complaint.
The political thriller series is entering its fourth season, with all eight episodes releasing on October 15. Keri Russell plays the titular US diplomat, Katherine "Kate" Wyler, who becomes the ambassador to the UK. Other key characters throughout the series include Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), Grace Penn (Allison Janney), Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear), Eidra Park (Ali Ahn), Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah).
In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for The Diplomat season 4, series creator and showrunner Debora Cahn was asked about how the show has been able to release new seasons on an annual basis. Cahn joked that she and her creative team do not sleep for a year before reflecting on how "every waking hour and many non-waking ones" are spent on getting the next season out, and she marvels at how she used to do this for shows that released 25 episodes annually. Check out her comments below:
We do it by not sleeping for a full year. Yeah, it's hard. It's a lot of stuff to get done really quickly. And I hear myself say that, and we're talking about eight episodes. I used to be on shows that did 25 episodes every single year. I don't know how we did that. I don't know what we're doing that suddenly takes up so much time. It is a little bit of a mystery, but it takes every waking hour and many non-waking ones for all of the year between seasons.
When asked about when a potential fifth season might come out and the status of the writers' room, Cahn replied, "You can ask, but I can't answer."
The Diplomat season 1 released all episodes on April 20, 2023, followed by season 2 on October 31, 2024, season 3 on October 16, 2025, and now season 4 on October 15, 2026. A streaming series not only returning annually, but almost always around the same time of year, has become an increasingly rare feat and one that sets the political thriller apart from its competition.
Two to three years have passed between most seasons of Netflix's popular series Stranger Things and Wednesday, and it's not only the case for science-fiction and fantasy shows, as comedy-dramas like Ginny & Georgia release new episodes every two years. The long hiatuses between seasons is an issue not exclusive to Netflix either, with Apple TV's Severance and HBO Max's House of the Dragon and The Last of Us among those on other platforms that frequently receive this criticism.
A years-long break between seasons has proven in many instances to lead to a significant drop in viewership, even for hits like Wednesday. The Diplomat has been able to avoid this by returning annually, and it also helps that the show has been consistently well-received, as per the 92% critics' score and 74% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
In ScreenRant's The Diplomat season 3 review, Rebecca VanAcker gave it a score of seven out of 10 stars and praised the series for "its strongest run of episodes yet" as "each episode is still its own satisfying meal, and no character is perfectly good or bad, but rather messy, believable, and incredibly fun to watch." With a 97% Tomatometer score for season 3, the highest yet for the show, the majority of critics agreed that the last season was the best one yet.
The Diplomat season 4 now looks to raise the bar even further. The new episodes will see President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler attempting to steal Russia's most powerful weapon while Kate and Todd work together to prevent this conspiracy from unleashing global catastrophe. Essandoh, Ahn, and Mensah also reprise their respective roles as Stuart, Eidra, and Billie in season 4.
The Diplomat season 4 releases all episodes on Netflix on October 15.
