New Godzilla Movie Confirms Official Runtime & Breaks Record After 7 Years

Godzilla Minus Zero is beating a major Godzilla record.

The sequel to Godzilla Minus One has confirmed its official runtime just a few months before release, breaking a major franchise record after seven years. The story of Godzilla Minus Zero takes place two years after the previous movie, with Kōichi Shikishima and his family attempting to live their lives in peace. However, Godzilla's return upends any chance of doing so, as his return causes even more chaos. Not much is known about the story, other than Kōichi and Noriko will be involved once more, and the famed kaiju will arrive in New York City.

Now, a listing for Godzilla Minus Zero at the New York Film Festival has confirmed the movie has a runtime of 135 minutes. This makes it the second-longest movie in the Godzilla franchise, second only to 1998's Godzilla, an American remake directed by Roland Emmerich that comes in at 139 minutes. As for its placement, it knocks down the previous second-place holder, 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is 131 minutes in length. This also makes the sequel 10 minutes longer than Godzilla Minus One.

Godzilla is no stranger to long movies. Every Godzilla movie made in Japan from 2004 onward has totaled to above two hours in length each. This includes Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, which sits at 125 minutes, and Shin Godzilla, a 2016 reimagining that's exactly 120 minutes long. The only recent movies in Japan that have been less than two hours are the Godzilla anime movie trilogy for Netflix released in 2017 and 2018, with each installment being around 90 minutes in length.

This will be the longest movie for the King of the Monsters since Godzilla Minus One ended, promising a massive story that continues to shake the franchise up with another period piece about the aftermath of war. While the movie will be released theatrically on November 3, 2026, it will have an early premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26 of this year. Much like the first movie, it's written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, whose vision for the project will continue Godzilla's rampage on the big screen.

Godzilla Minus Zero isn't the only major release the franchise will be seeing in the next year. On the American side of things is Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, a new installment in the Monsterverse that will see Godzilla and Kong battling a new threat, rumored to be Spacegodzilla. The movie doesn't have an official trailer yet, leaving details and, subsequently, the runtime, a mystery. But, for the newest movie, it seems like what happens next will be the kaiju's biggest outing in almost a decade.

As more information about Godzilla Minus Zero gets revealed in the coming months, so too will the sheer size of the events that are about to unfold. With the monster now going global with his rampage, it remains to be seen how the world will be portrayed, and what major alterations to expect because of what Godzilla ends up doing.
