New Lord of the Rings Release Soars to Success with $1M in Pre-orders

There seems to be an endless supply of untold Lord of the Rings tales for fans to explore. Even though The Fellowship of the Ring was first published in 1954 — with The Hobbit arriving even earlier in 1937 — we're still finding new ways to dig into Middle-earth lore.

This summer alone has brought a surprise re-release of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a first look at The Hunt for Gollum, and new details about the upcoming third season of The Rings of Power. Now, fans have another reason to return to Middle-earth: The One Ring tabletop RPG is getting a major update, and its crowdfunding campaign is already smashing its goals.

Free League Publishing launched its latest crowdfunding campaign for The One Ring on Hobbit Day, the fictional birthday shared by Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. The campaign set a relatively modest funding goal of $50,000, but it blew past that figure in less than an hour.

And it hasn't slowed down since. The campaign has now raised more than $1.1 million from nearly 5,000 backers, more than 22 times its original goal, with 23 days still remaining.

The One Ring is getting new Middle-earth adventures

For those unfamiliar with The One Ring, it's a tabletop roleplaying game set in Middle-earth, where players create their own characters and set out on adventures across the world of The Lord of the Rings. Rather than simply recreating the events of the books, the game lets players tell their own stories in J.R.R. Tolkien's setting, whether that's exploring the wilderness, battling enemies, or dealing with the dangers that come with traveling through Middle-earth.

The crowdfunding campaign supports an updated version of The One Ring, along with several new expansions and additions. Among the offerings are the updated Core Rules, The White Tower and the Hall of Gold, which expands the realm of Rohan, and Creatures Strange and Foul, a new bestiary.

The updated game will also include rules for solo play, dubbed "Strider Mode," allowing players to venture across Middle-earth without a full party.

Several stretch goals have already been unlocked as the campaign has continued to climb, including printed maps of Rohan and Gondor and Minas Tirith, Hobgoblins as a new adversary, a bonus landmark called the Prison of Ras Morthil, and cardboard standees.The campaign also includes special Collector's Editions that are only available during the crowdfunding period.

With more than three weeks still left in the campaign, The One Ring has already turned what began as a $50,000 crowdfunding effort into a project with more than $1 million in backing. For fans looking for yet another way to spend time in Tolkien's world, there are now plenty of options.
