Nintendo has decades of history to draw upon at any given moment, and that can be tough to compete with when it comes to taking on The Big N. Even Mario alone is a massive franchise, but all the others have built-in fanbases, so whenever Nintendo is poised to re-release something, people are paying attention. Just look at the recent relaunch of the Virtual Boy.
While every generation has its fans, there's still something special about the Nintendo 64. It helped usher in a completely new era of gaming with the original PlayStation and kicked off a longstanding tradition of innovation in 3D.
Now, you can relive the Nintendo 64 even more easily. As Nintendo just revealed on X, there are a few Nintendo 64 freebies for you to grab.
As a reminder, Nintendo recently launched the Nintendo Music app, which lets you listen to songs from select Nintendo games. It's an official service for Nintendo Switch Online members, accessible on platforms such as mobile and PC.
Titled "Nintendo 64 Selects," the playlist comprises "the very best tracks spanning Nintendo Music's entire library of Nintendo 64 games." Nintendo says the track order changes daily, and the opening salvo includes classics from Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, and Star Fox 64. Screenshots of the games also adorn the playlist for each track.
It's great timing, in a way, since Nintendo is poised to release Star Fox on the Switch 2 imminently, which is a remake of Star Fox 64. Then again, it's never really a bad time to celebrate one of Nintendo's most interesting console releases.
As for the Nintendo 64 Selects playlist, here are the offerings:
- Title Theme (Wave Race 64)
- Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 64)
- Lost Woods (Ocarina of Time)
- Sunny Beach (Wave Race 64)
- Opening Theme (Star Fox 64)
- Birdman (Pilotwings 64)
- Dire, Dire Rocks (Super Mario 64)
- Yoshi's Story (Yoshi's Story)
- Luigi Raceway (Mario Kart 64)
- Star Wolf's Theme (Star Fox 64)
- Main Theme (Super Mario 64)
- Hyrule Field Main Theme (Ocarina of Time)
- Drake Lake (Wave Race 64)
- Mario Kart 64 Title Screen (Mario Kart 64)
- Area 6 (Star Fox 64)
- Hang Glider (Pilotwings 64)
- Slider (Super Mario 64)
- Dream Chaser [Silence] (F-Zero X)
- Decided by the Eyes [Big Blue] (F-Zero X)
- Endless Challenge [Mute City] (F-Zero X)
- Yoshi's Song (Yoshi's Story)
- Yoshi's Tale (Yoshi's Story)
- Gyrocopter (Pilotwings 64)
- Title Theme (Ocarina of Time)
There's plenty there to whip up some nostalgia in retro gamers, but there's also a lot of heart in these tracks; enough to create new generations of Nintendo 64 fans.
