While Obsession only released just over a month ago, there are already a range of interesting plans to follow up on the harrowing horror film's success. 2026 has been a big year for horror even though we're just halfway through it, with releases like Iron Lung, Backrooms, and of course Obsession providing audiences with a varied range of scares for every occasion.

That said, Obsession has thus far been the most financially successful of its horror-focused peers, with the movie currently being 2026's seventh highest grossing film thanks to its $334 million worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo), and having earned its fair share of positive reviews to match these stellar fiscal results as a result of its engaging and yet truly unsettling story revolving around its lead character using a magical wish and discovering the consequences of his actions.

As such, the questions around whether and when a sequel to Obsession might emerge have been perhaps inevitable, particularly given the world of the film does seem like it has far more room for further stories if so wished. Promisingly, it already appears more than one film is set to capitalize on this potential, even if Obsession's two successors follow on from it in different capacities.

There's Already Another Movie Set In The Obsession Universe & Talks About A Sequel Story

The most immediately pressing of the follow-up plans for Obsession is that of the film's writer and director Curry Barker's upcoming movie Anything But Ghosts. Barker confirmed back in May the film would be set in the same universe as Obsession and is planned to feature a direct reference to Nikki's story in the 2026 movie (via Deadline), though the upcoming film's plot is instead set to revolve around two fake paranormal investigators who find themselves up against legitimate ghosts and are thus forced to confront their own con in catastrophic fashion.

This premise is immediately promising in that it builds from the same foundations as Obsession, wherein magic and the paranormal are real, but those within the universe generally are unaware of the fact, which tends to lead them into treacherous waters as they delve into this territory and only totally understand they have done so when it's far too late.

Anything But Ghosts was announced in April 2026 to have finished principal photography, and Curry Barker still has a lot of other films on his plate in the near future - as Barker is set to handle The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, and an unnamed extra film he's recently reportedly signed an eight-figure deal for. Despite this, the creator has also spoken about having some specific story plans for an Obsession sequel, stating that while he sees it as being a fair few years off, he has "such a cool idea for it that I won’t say" (as per The Hollywood Reporter).

Interestingly, Curry Barker has additionally mentioned that he believes the story format would work well for an Obsession anthology series of one-off stories about other wishes gone wrong, which means there could be a third follow-up to the story of Obsession incoming too, though it's less clear whether this could and will come to fruition.

An Obsession Sequel Being Some Time Off Is Good News For The Series & Its Universe

The horror and intrigue the One-Wish Willow built up around Obsession's universe means that plenty of people are sure to be curious about the further narrative potential of this world, but Curry Barker's comments about wanting to hold on any plans for Obsession 2 do seem to make the most sense for more than one reason.

First and perhaps most practically, Barker's schedule as a writer and director doesn't seem to leave him a lot of free time for the foreseeable future. The upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie alone should no doubt demand a fair amount of the creator's time and creative attention, not to mention the other projects that will be in various stages of production around this time, meaning there's a clear logistical reason Obsession 2 is worth delving into later down the line.

On another level, Obsession 2 is also a film that it seems would narratively benefit from a notable wait between the first movie and its prospective sequel. Horror is a genre that often overplays into popular films and concepts by releasing a swathe of sequels before an audience has chance to fully want more, and avoiding this issue does seem as though it would be the most savvy move for a follow-up Obsession installment.

Though waiting too long to potentially begin more actively making Obsession 2 a reality could come with its own drawbacks, the fact we already have one follow-up film of sorts set in Obsession's world in progress should hopefully mean Obsession 2 could take a few years to become concrete reality without harming the movie's chances, allowing the film universe to get another chapter that's had time to fully ferment its own story and sense of horror.
