The Social Reckoning is going through a reckoning of its own at the box office.
2026's The Social Reckoning is a sequel to the Oscar-winning 2010 hit The Social Network, following Mark Zuckerberg's (Jeremy Strong, replacing Jesse Eisenberg) conflict with Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White). The Aaron Sorkin movie, which reportedly cost roughly $30 million, had a disappointing domestic debut of $5 million, following in the footsteps of the Tom Cruise Oscarbait movie Digger, which debuted with a disappointing $8 million the weekend before and is expected to lose about $200 million by the end of its run.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that, as of Saturday morning, The Social Reckoning is projected to earn a 3-day total of $1.55 million by the end of its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office. If these numbers hold, the movie will plummet 69% from its already disappointing opening weekend. This is an even bigger drop than the one earned by Digger, which fell 60% during its own sophomore weekend, crashing from its debut domestic chart position at No. 4 straight to No. 8.
It has fallen even further behind its own predecessor, which had a significantly bigger debut without even adjusting for inflation. 2010's The Social Network debuted with $22.4 million at the domestic box office and earned $15.4 million during its sophomore weekend, dropping just 31.2%.
The Social Network earned $224.9 million worldwide by the end of its run, becoming the 32nd highest-grossing movie of 2010.
Even if The Social Reckoning had earned the same worldwide multiplier as The Social Network, it would have only legged out to a worldwide gross of roughly $50 million. However, this quick downward trajectory shows that it will most likely fall considerably short of that number. This is not a good sign for the film's profitability.
Even though its reported budget of between $30 and $42 million puts The Social Reckoning in a much better position than Digger, which is an outright bomb thanks to its reported budget of $125 million or more, that price tag still most likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere between $75 and $105 million, which is a range that it seems increasingly unlikely to reach.
The Social Reckoning reviews don't indicate that a word-of-mouth push is going to give it a boost. The movie has a Rotten 55% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and while it has a superior 72% score from verified audience members on the Popcornmeter and a CinemaScore of B-, neither of those scores indicates a level of enthusiasm that could significantly impact its prospects.

It remains to be seen if any of the year's upcoming Oscar season movies will perform better than Digger and The Social Reckoning. The titles coming to wide release before the end of the year include the KJ Apa-led Jimmy Stewart biopic Jimmy (out November 6), the Martin McDonagh comedy Wild Horse Nine (November 6), the Sylvester Stallone biopic I Play Rocky (November 20), and the Andrew Scott drama Elsinore (limited on November 20, followed by an expansion).
