You probably still think of Alex Winter as Kiefer Sutherland’s bloodsucking, peroxide-haired vampire biker mate Marko in 1987’s The Lost Boys, or the air-guitaring slacker Bill S Preston Esq alongside Keanu Reeves’s Ted “Theodore” Logan in the Bill & Ted franchise.

But Winter actually started out as a child actor on Broadway, appearing in The King and I with Yul Brynner before making his big-screen debut opposite Charles Bronson in 1985’s Death Wish 3. As well as the above, he played poet and physician John William Polidori in 1988’s Haunted Summer, and co-wrote, co-directed and starred in the 1993 cult comedy Freaked.

Since then, Winter has mainly been behind the camera: he wrote and directed the well-received psychological thriller Fever, starring ET the Extra-Terrestrial’s Henry Thomas, in 1999, and has made documentaries on everything from the dark web to child stardom and Frank Zappa. In 2020, he reunited with his old buddy Reeves for a third Bill & Ted film; and then reunited with him again in 2025, playing Vladimir opposite Reeves’s Estragon in Waiting for Godot on Broadway.
