Punk rock legend Lou Koller dead at 59 after two-year cancer battle

Punk rock legend Lou Koller has passed away at the age of 59 after a battle with cancer. 

The late singer was known for being the frontman of the band Sick Of It All, which was formed back in 1986 in New York City. 

His death was confirmed by the late singer's bandmates who shared an emotional statement to Instagram on Friday. 

'It's with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,' they penned. 'The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.' 

Koller's passing took place shortly before the band celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. 

'And Lou's camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years.' 

'We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman,' the statement continued.

'Lou had the power to raise everyone's spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.' 

His bandmates added, 'At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou's medical fund.

'You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years.'

Koller's 'battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.' 

Daily Mail has reached out to a rep for the band Sick Of It All, but has yet to hear back. 

Back in June 2024, the music artist revealed that doctors had found a tumor in his esophagus and was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cancer.

Koller had shared a video to the group's Instagram page at the time, explaining that doctors 'found a tumor in my esophagus that goes into my stomach.

'And I'll have to be getting treatment all summer - and of course, with full support of the band.' 

He continued, 'As soon as they heard it, they were, like, "Forget the tour. Just get healthy."' 

Koller said that both he and the band 'feel sorry for the fans' as well as the crew and promoters. 

The singer further expressed, 'Thank you so much for all of your support. I'll hopefully beat this thing and see you at the end of the summer - or maybe the winter.' 

The caption also read: 'Here's the reason we had to cancel the summer tour. Sorry to all our fans and friends but sometimes life blindsides you like that. 

'Thank you for your support! Take care of each other!! Play so Sick Of It All loud!' 

Koller was born in Queens, New York and later formed the hardcore punk band Sick Of It All with his brother Pete when they were still in high school. 

The siblings were joined by drummer David Lamb as the original members of the group. Mark McNeely also later joined as bassist. 

The band's first show took place in May 1986 in Long Island at Right Track Inn. 

Armand Majidi and Rich Cipriano replaced Lamb and McNeely when they left the punk group. 

Sick Of It All's first studio album was titled Blood, Sweat And No Tears and dropped in 1989. 

The band has released 12 studio albums, with their most recent LP being Wake The Sleeping Dragon! (2018). 

They dropped tracks over the years such as Scratch The Surface, Step Down and Survival Of The Fittest.

Fans jumped to X to mourn the tragic loss of Koller, with one penning, 'Heartbreaking and incredibly unfair. A genuinely good dude taken way too soon. You fought the good fight, Lou - rest in peace.' 

Another wrote, 'RIP legend,' and one added, 'A legend and a true original. Lou was and IS hardcore.'

'Lou's voice was one of a kind and meant a lot to us growing up in NY in the 90s. He will be missed,' one X user shared. 

Another said, 'Working in venues, I had the pleasure of meeting Lou several times. He was everything you'd expect him to be.

'Legend fits him well. July 2026 has been horrible but this hurts especially hard. Much love to his family, fans and friends.'
