Recasting Twin Peaks For 2026: All 16 Main Characters

Twin Peaks was such a seminal and groundbreaking and iconic TV show that it’s hard to imagine the last three decades of television without it. Without Twin Peaks, we wouldn’t have mystery-box shows like Lost and Yellowjackets. Without Twin Peaks, we wouldn’t have sci-fi soap operas like Dark. When David Lynch turned his cinematic eye to the small screen, he brought a visual flair and a chilling atmosphere worthy of the theatrical experience to the airwaves of ABC.

Imagining a world without Twin Peaks is like imagining a world without I Love Lucy or The Sopranos; they marked a watershed moment for the entire TV industry, so the history of television would’ve turned out completely different without them. And it would be a fool’s errand to try to remake Twin Peaks in 2026. It was such a unique vision, and so intrinsically tied to Lynch’s own personal worldview, that no one else could pull it off.

But, for argument’s sake, let’s assume Twin Peaks didn’t get made until 2026, or it was getting remade in 2026, so all the main characters had to be recast. If Twin Peaks was getting made today, who would play Dale Cooper? Who would play Sheriff Harry S. Truman? No one could replace Kyle MacLachlan, Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, et al, but it’s fun to speculate on who else could play these roles for a different generation.

David Corenswet As Dale Cooper

David Corenswet's Superman with a half-smile in the DC movie

Special Agent Dale Cooper is the heart and soul of Twin Peaks. Kyle MacLachlan wore his heart on his sleeve, but also brought a stranger side to Cooper that kept him compelling (and made him the perfect protagonist for Twin Peaks). David Corenswet would be great in this role, and not just because he has the right initials.

Corenswet has a lovable naivety as Superman, but he’s also played darker roles in Pearl and We Own This City. Cooper needs to be an eccentric everyman we can all relate to, but he also needs an underlying darkness and a weirdness that we can’t really wrap our heads around. MacLachlan nailed that, and I’m sure the guy who played both Clark Kent and the porn projectionist in Pearl could nail it, too.

Matthew Rhys As Harry S. Truman

Sheriff Harry S. Truman is the ordinary everyman opposite Cooper. As they team up to investigate the murder of Laura Palmer, Truman acts as a sort of sounding board of normalcy opposite Cooper’s weirdness. Matthew Rhys is the ultimate everyman. He’s a gifted dramatic actor, but he’s also a great comic performer, and he always knows just how big to play it.

Rhys’ recent Emmy-winning turn in Widow’s Bay would make a perfect audition tape for Twin Peaks if they were really casting the show in 2026. His portrayal of Mayor Tom is what made Widow’s Bay’s mix of horror and comedy work so well. He maintains a wry, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor in the face of the macabre, and that’s essential for getting Twin Peaks’ tonal trickery just right.

Olivia Cooke As Shelly Johnson

Shelly Johnson is one of Twin Peaks’ sweetest and most likable characters, but she also leads an incredibly dark and difficult life. Olivia Cooke would be just as perfect for this role as Mädchen Amick was.

Cooke’s early roles portrayed her as the quintessential “girl next door.” From Ready Player One to Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Cooke was often cast to play the angsty lead’s Manic Pixie Dream Girl. But, in the years since then, she’s also played roles with more edge and grit, like Sid in Slow Horses and Alicent in House of the Dragon. She’d make a great Shelly.

Jack Innanen As Bobby Briggs

Paul Baker in Adults

The role of Bobby Briggs, Laura Palmer’s boyfriend, was originally played by Dana Ashbrook. It’s a tricky role to get right, because Bobby needs to have an undeniable charm, but he also needs to have a bit of intrigue that keeps us at arm’s length.

Jack Innanen could do something really interesting with this role. He’s best known for starring in Adults on FX as Paul Baker, a similarly mysterious yet charismatic young man who seems to turn heads wherever he goes.

Oscar Isaac As Benjamin Horne

Oscar Isaac in mid-fight as Moon Knight

Benjamin Horne, father of Audrey Horne, is the richest man in Twin Peaks. He’s modeled after a typical cutthroat 1980s businessman — the Gordon Gekko archetype — but there’s a lot more depth to him than that. Underneath the facade of his wealth and power, he’s a deeply sad and lonely man.

That was played beautifully by Richard Beymer in the original series, and it could be recaptured by Oscar Isaac in 2026. Isaac did a great job of playing that kind of character — the rich, successful, but ultimately unhappy and unfulfilled business tycoon — in the second season of Beef on Netflix.

Mikey Madison As Donna Hayward

Ani in the car in Anora

Thanks to the incomparable Lara Flynn Boyle, Donna Hayward was one of the most magnetic characters on Twin Peaks. Anyone cast to play Donna in 2026 would have to have a similar allure, where audiences can’t help but watch them.

A few years ago, Margaret Qualley would’ve been perfect, but she may have aged out of the role by now. Instead, Oscar winner Mikey Madison could bring some of that Anora charm to the role of Laura Palmer’s best friend.

Jenna Ortega As Audrey Horne

Wednesday Addams looking shocked while wearing her school uniform in Wednesday season 2

After she reimagined Wednesday Addams for a new generation and became Tim Burton’s muse, Jenna Ortega has become Hollywood’s new go-to casting choice for the kind of oddball roles that used to go to Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci. Audrey Horne is exactly that kind of character, and Ortega would do something really fun with it (like Death of a Unicorn, if it had better writing).

Bryan Cranston As Dr. Will Hayward

Bryan Cranston as Walter White in Breaking Bad

No one could replace Warren Frost, one of Hollywood’s great character actors, as Dr. Will Hayward. But you could cast a different character actor to bring a different energy to Donna’s sensitive father. Just based on his performance in the overdose sequence of Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston would do an amazing job in the scene where Dr. Hayward refuses to do Laura’s autopsy due to his personal connection to her.

Naomi Watts As Norma Jennings

Rachel (Naomi Watts) looking shocked in The Ring

Shelly’s boss Norma Jennings, the owner of the Double R Diner, isn’t a huge role, but she’s deeply unhappy in her marriage and furiously resents her mother. This role requires a beautiful blonde with serious acting chops, and Naomi Watts fits the bill.

Watts is no stranger to the world of David Lynch, having starred as multiple characters in Mulholland Drive, and she even appeared in Twin Peaks itself when it finally came back for a third season. She’d be perfect for Norma; she’s got the look, but she’s got the range, too.

Kit Connor As James Hurley

Kit Connor as Nick in Heartstopper Forever on Netflix

James Hurley is introduced to us as a regular kid, but he turns out to be having an affair with the dead prom queen, and he later becomes attracted to her lookalike cousin. This role needs an actor who can play the aw-shucks relatable teen, but also bring something deeper and darker to a role. A younger Robert Pattinson would’ve been perfect, but we’ll have to settle for our new Cyclops, Kit Connor.
