'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Is Officially the Highest Grossing Film in Domestic Box Office History

Spider-Man is on top of the world. After 47 days in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office history. Spidey reached $936.773 million on Tuesday, overtaking The Force Awakens’ 936 million. The Star Wars film had held the title for more than a decade, having been released on Dec. 18, 2015.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also performed excellently at the global box office and is currently at $2.45 billion, putting it behind only Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion). James Cameron films round out the rest of the top five, with Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion) and Titanic ($2.2 billion).

A remaining test for Brand New Day is whether it can become the first film to clear $1 billion at the domestic box office. While it is still technically possible, the feat seems unlikely now without a re-release, given it made around $12-13 million from Sept. 8 to Sept. 14. Brand New Day got off to an explosive domestic debut that grossed $360 million, giving it the biggest opening weekend ever in the U.S. It should be noted that these figures are not adjusted for inflation. If they were, Gone with the Wind would still trounce the competition: the film grossed over $200 million in the U.S., which would put it at almost $1.9 billion in modern currency.

2026 has been a turnaround year for the box office

Brand New Day is the latest success story in a year of domestic box office breakouts. The Odyssey is the second-highest-grossing film in North America, having made $601 million since its opening on July 17. A pair of animated films, Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, are in third and fourth place, respectively, at $480 and $430 million.

The year has also been defined by unexpected horror hits like Obsession, which is seventh at the 2026 domestic box office with $263 million, and Backrooms, at $197 million. Obsession was made for under $1 million, while Backrooms had a $10 million budget. Overall, the domestic box office is well on its way to a $10 billion year, which would be its first since the pre-pandemic era; as of last month, it passed $7 billion, a 20 percent increase over the same point in 2025.
