While she first built her expertise writing about video games, she has since pivoted towards gaming hardware, with a focus on PC components, peripherals, handhelds, and performance-driven tech. When she’s not testing gear or writing about the latest hardware trends, she can usually be found diving into competitive shooters or keeping up with the evolving esports scene.

There’s plenty to like about Stardew Valley, but I wouldn’t hesitate to highlight its iconic 2D pixel art visuals as one of its best features. Most fans would say they’re almost alarmingly attached to the game’s original look and feel, which is endearing, to say the least. That said, wouldn’t you love to experience it all in 3D?

A kind member of the community (and popular modder) named spacechase0 is apparently working on a free mod for Stardew Valley that transforms it into a 3D world. Whether it’s interacting with your pets, spouse, and fellow villagers or carrying out your daily activities in the Valley, you can now do it with the camera right in the middle of your forehead. Get it? Well, it’s not just 3D—it’s first-person too. The mod, which is coded in the original game engine, will also let you (optionally) play Stardew Valley in VR.

Spacechase0, also known as kittycatcasey on YouTube, has released a video demonstration of what the project looks like. Note that the mod isn’t currently available for download, so you can only watch and admire it for now.

To describe the video, it starts with the player spawning in their cozy room, with a first-person view, of course. After interacting with their adorable family, they step into the lively outside world, where they harvest a bunch of blueberries, greet their pets, run around the garden, swim in a pool, cut down trees, and whatnot.

While all that sounds great, it’s not a perfect world either—at least not yet. The video is cute, but it’s hard to miss that most entities in the world are still 2D. Only the terrain is in 3D. All the trees, pets, and objects basically look like billboards, making the video pretty exhausting to watch after a while. The good news is that spacechase0 has acknowledged the gaps, assuring viewers that they're still working on the project.

“Right now, just about almost everything besides the terrain is billboarded sprites, but the plan is to over time give everything a unique 3D model.”

The modder shared that they’ve been working on the project for a long time now, and the video only shows a very early version of it. They also confirmed that no AI has been used to build this version.

“I’ve been working on this project on and off since mid/late 2025, and wanted to show an early version of it. It's not in a playable state yet but is a decent proof of concept.”

Fans are, unsurprisingly, excited about the possibility of playing Stardew Valley in 3D. The concept video attracted several positive comments from players who are ecstatic about the chance to see their favorite game come to life beyond the pixel art.

“I’ve been saying this for years, and all my friends thought I was stupid lmao! But I knew it would be so cool to see Stardew Valley in 3D!” one fan, whose dream had seemingly come true, wrote. “I didn’t think it would be possible to have 1st person, though; that kinda blew my mind away!”

Well, it’s pretty clear that if the mod makes it out of development and delivers on its potential, it’d be massive. It may even force ConcernedApe to make it an official mode.
