Taylor Sheridan has spent years building an empire of cowboys, gangsters, and people who generally prefer solving their problems with firearms, so adapting Call of Duty might be the most natural career move imaginable. The enormously successful video game franchise is finally heading to the big screen, with Sheridan writing the screenplay and Peter Berg attached to direct. Now, two rising stars are eyeing the project up.
Speaking exclusively with Collider's Aidan Kelley at the Newport Beach Film Festival, rising horror darlings Ray Nicholson (Smile 2) and Inde Navarrette (Obsession) both spoke out about their desire to join the upcoming Call of Duty adaptation. Nicholson, who recently worked with Berg on Mosquito Day, admitted that he would jump at the opportunity to collaborate with the filmmaker again. He told Kelley:
"I mean, that would be amazing. I'm pretty sure that they want all Brits, and I have the worst British accent of all time. So I'm working with a dialect coach secretly, 24/7. But it would be an honor to work with Peter again. Obviously, Call of Duty is really cool IP, and I think the fact that the film industry is getting into the video game space is really cool. And I hope that opens a lot of things up."
Nicholson also praised Berg's approach to filmmaking, describing him as one of the most authentic people he's encountered in the industry. "He's the most authentic human being I've ever met in my life," Nicholson explained. "You are going to meet Peter Berg where he is at. He is not going to capitulate to you." He added that Berg's honesty made the experience particularly rewarding, explaining that "he does this amazing action stuff, but he has so much heart."
Inde Navarrette Is Ready to Join 'Call of Duty' Too
Navarrette, who was recently announced as the newest actor to play Rogue in the upcoming X-Men reboot, was even more enthusiastic when Kelley raised the possibility of appearing in Sheridan and Berg's upcoming adaptation. A lifelong fan and former streamer, Navarrette made it clear that the filmmakers wouldn't have to do much convincing. When asked what it would take for her to join the film, she said:
"Nothing. It's a phone call. It's a text. if they call me, they're like, 'There's a car outside. You gotta go.' Definitely. I'm a big fan. I'm really excited to see what they do. As a fan, I would be excited. I'm a big fan. Yeah. Very excited."
The Call of Duty franchise has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, spanning conflicts from World War II to modern military operations and futuristic warfare. With Sheridan's experience writing military and crime thrillers and Berg's work on movies including Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, the adaptation has two filmmakers familiar with large-scale action and high-pressure situations.
For now, the Call of Duty movie remains in development, with casting and release details still to be announced. Stay tuned at Collider for further updates.
