Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma's life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media.

Warning: Major SPOILERS lie ahead for Ted Lasso season 4!Ted Lasso season 4 just changed everything for AFC Richmond, and co-creator Brendan Hunt has some thoughts about season 5.

The latest season of the Apple TV hit concluded with several major changes for the show's central characters. Ted (Jason Sudeikis) stepped down as manager of AFC Richmond's women's team, allowing Alice (Tanya Reynolds) to take over while he became an assistant manager alongside Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, Roy (Brett Goldstein) accepted a job managing Chelsea as he and Keeley (Juno Temple) prepare to become parents, while Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) proposed to Matthijs (Matteo van der Grijn).

Speaking with Variety following the finale, co-creator, executive producer, writer, and Coach Beard actor Brendan Hunt addressed whether those developments could continue in Ted Lasso season 5. While Hunt revealed that there was hope for the show's return beyond season 4, he stressed that there is currently no indication another season will happen from co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis:

Brendan Hunt: He plays the cards close to his chest, and I’m not privy to whatever poker game that I hope is happening between the powers that be. I think we’ve always basically hoped we were coming back for more than one, but if it ends up just being one, then OK, that’s fine. It did end nicely. We’ll just have to see.

Hunt also pointed to several storylines that could be explored if the show does return. The Ted Lasso season 4 finale with Mae Green's death leaves several questions about what comes next for AFC Richmond. The co-creator specifically mentioned his interest in seeing Ted and Beard operate as peers rather than maintaining their previous hierarchy, as well as the various relationship and job changes among the rest of the show's cast:

Brendan Hunt: Roy and Keeley becoming parents, curious about that. Rebecca married, curious about that. The fellas running the pub, and how’s the team going to take to Alice as their leader? These are all just more like questions than cliffhangers. But also, there’s not yet any indication that we’re going to get to answer those questions. So at the moment, they’re still lingering in the air.

Hunt's admission that the team had "always basically hoped" to return for more than one season suggests season 4 was not necessarily envisioned as the definitive end of Ted Lasso. However, he stopped short of confirming discussions about season 5 and what's next for the Apple TV series.

The season 4 finale also allows the series to end without relying on an unresolved cliffhanger. Ted's decision to step back gives Alice the opportunity to lead Richmond while allowing him more time with his son, Henry. At the same time, the other changes at Richmond create potential starting points should the series receive another season.

Given the show memorably took a three-year hiatus between its third and fourth seasons, it's understandable that now that the latter is at an end, the question already becomes what the chances are of Ted Lasso season 5. Apple TV exec Eddy Cue told ScreenRant in mid-August that the chances were looking strong for the show to continue, permitted Sudeikis and the rest of the creative team wanted to keep the show, while fellow exec Matt Cherniss indicated the month prior that the three-time Emmy winner was ready to get to work on the next season.

It's also worth noting that co-creator Bill Lawrence frequently goes into his shows with three-season arcs, having similarly implemented such structure into fellow Apple TV hit Shrinking. With the Jason Segal and Harrison Ford-led series also set to return with the original cast, yet a different story, in its own fourth season, it does seem likely that he, Sudeikis and Hunt have at least two more seasons' worth of stories for Ted Lasso.

For now, Ted Lasso season 5 remains unconfirmed. As Hunt put it, the questions created by the finale are still "lingering in the air," leaving the door open for AFC Richmond's story to continue without guaranteeing that viewers will get to see what happens next. However, given season 4 also scored rave reviews from critics and put the show back atop Apple TV's Top 10 for the past 10 weeks straight, it seems likely a proper update will come in the very near future.

The entirety of Ted Lasso season 4 is now available to stream on Apple TV.
