‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ Team to Reunite for ‘Secretary’ Live Script Reading
“Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” Jane Schoenbrun‘s upcoming third feature film, is a delightfully and unexpectedly hot movie, following a mismatched pair — a young horror director (Hannah Einbender) and a reclusive former final girl (Gillian Anderson) — as they work together on a new film and descend into psychosexual mania. Now, the main trio behind the film will reunite to retell another unconventional, erotic romance.
IndieWire can exclusively reveal that Schoenbrun will direct Einbender and Anderson in an upcoming script live reading of the 2002 dom-sub rom-com “Secretary.” The event will take place on July 28, at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. Additional casting for the live read will be announced at a later date.
The one-night-only reading is part of the Live Read series of script reads, presented by Film Independent in partnership with “Teenage Sex and Death” distributor MUBI. First launched in 2011, the series sees acclaimed directors and casts put their own spin on classic material for on-stage readings of famous screenplays, with previous films that received readings including “Heathers,” “Conclave,” “Bringing Up Baby,” “Jennifer’s Body,” “Back to the Future,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and more.
“Every Live Read is an opportunity to rediscover a great screenplay through a completely new perspective,” Rachel Bleemer, Director of Programming and events at Film Independent, said in a statement. “‘Secretary’ is a bold, provocative film that continues to spark conversation more than two decades later. With Jane Schoenbrun directing and Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder leading the cast, this promises to be one of our most unforgettable Live Reads yet.”
Written by Erin Cressida Wilson and originally directed by Steven Shainberg, “Secretary” stars Maggie Gyllenhaal in her breakout role as a young woman in a dysfunctional family who returns from a mental hospital and seeks work as the secretary to a successful attorney (James Spader). While working together, the pair develop a highly charged BDSM sexual relationship, which only grows more complicated when they develop romantic feelings for each other. “Secretary” received positive reviews from critics, and Wilson won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.
Mubi will release “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” in theaters August 7.
