The Expanse Official 2027 Return Confirms The Franchise Is Far From Over

James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The Expanse really did go through the rigmarole on the way to completing its story. The show was canceled after three seasons on SyFy, before Prime Video picked up the rights and gave fans a further three seasons, producing arguably one of the best genre releases of all time in the process.
Sadly, that story has now drawn to a close, but it would be a huge shame if they were to leave the IP behind entirely when there are so many fans waiting to hear more. Happily, that's not a future that we have to reckon with, as another adaptation is on the way that brings the franchise to an entirely new medium.
Over on Steam, you should be able to find the store page for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, an upcoming action RPG that really puts the emphasis on player choice to guide the story. Though much of the narrative is still under wraps, the developer did share a brief description to let fans know what to expect:
"By the 24th century, humanity has conquered the cosmos. However, life has remained anything but easy. In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a story-driven sci-fi Action RPG, you play as a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose brief shore leave on the asteroid Eros spirals out of control. Trapped in a deadly lockdown and drawn into a solar system-wide conspiracy far beyond your control, you’ll have to adapt, survive, taking command of the most advanced ship in the whole of the solar system.
"Create and customize your own captain — Earther, Martian, or Belter — and lead a crew of highly-skilled specialists as you face off against escalating threats, political pressure, and a relentless enemy that will stop at nothing to see you dead. In a solar system held together by fragile alliances, every decision leaves its mark."
With the next Mass Effect game still likely years away, with no guarantee that we'll ever see it at all, this is comfortably the next best thing. The game appears to feature a crew loyalty system that's very similar to what we've seen in Bioware's series, with everyone carrying their own stories and scars that influence their behavior.
Combat is also in third-person, and you'll need to utilize a variety of abilities and cover to take out your most dangerous foes, while iconic locations like Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna are all set to feature heavily.
The only caveat to us having a good time with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is that we don't have a proper release date just yet, with the game scheduled to launch at some point in Q2 2027. That said, what we have seen of the game so far does look pretty complete, so hopefully there won't be major delays on the way to that goal.
