James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

2026 is proving to be a very exciting year for fans of The Legend of Zelda already, with Nintendo confirming the upcoming release of plenty of projects and products, all as part of the franchise's wider 40th birthday. The Ocarina of Time Remake is on the way later this year, while the big-budget movie adaptation is continuing production.

The only unfortunate caveat to the latter is that we don't really know anything about it at this point in time, beyond a few very limited screenshots of the actors on set. Now, another image is causing plenty of debate online, and it could signpost exactly what their intentions are for the movie.

The Legend Of Zelda Is Embracing Realism

Link and Zelda look into the sun in Twilight princess Nintendo

Over on Reddit, one user shared a production photograph from the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie, which shows off the customized clapper board and an interesting design for Link. Though it doesn't look like the exact design that we've seen in one of the previous games, it very much has shades of the realism era and Twilight Princess.

That opened up a bunch of speculation in the comments from fans about the direction that the movie is taking, and what consequences it could have for the franchise as a whole. "So what route do we think they’re going? Retelling of a game’s story or an original story? Cause that costume looks suspiciously Twilight Princess-like…" one comment read.

While another said in response, "I think an original plot seems most likely, since Zelda's with him and her costume is similar to BotW/TotK, but he's in Twilight Princess gear."

"I'm expecting something largely original but loosely following the typical structure of a Zelda plot. I can't see them delving into the Twilight Realm and Midna when they're just beginning; that's best saved for when you need to add a twist to the formula," a third said.

"I'm expecting it to be a bit of a remix of everything. You'll get lots of iconography from the newer games and the overall aesthetic focus will likely be on that stuff, but you'll likely see the film take lots of notes from the classic games too, like Ocarina of Time," another added.

Whatever Nintendo and the movie's production team has decided to do with The Legend of Zelda adaptation, we should get to see plenty more of it than we have to date, at some point this year. There are plenty of franchise projects on the way, so a Nintendo Direct feels like it's a must before 2026 draws to a close.
