The Story Behind This Dog and Duck’s Bond Is Surprisingly Sweet

Chad Michael Murray, Sarah Roemer’s Hilarious Date Night Video Is Going Viral

It’s a dog-eat-dog world—so this golden retriever befriended a duck.

Justin Cannarelli and Tori Cannarelli, a couple who hail from Long Island, New York, are sharing a glimpse into their sweet pets who became unlikely fur-ever friends: Louie the Duck and Barley the Golden Retriever.

“I never thought I would own a duck,” Tori admitted during an interview with CBS Sunday Mornings Aug. 9. “I never expected him to stay long term.”

In 2024, however, an old dog got a new friend when the couple’s dog Barley was diagnosed with epilepsy and started taking a new medicine that changed her disposition.

“She lost her spunk,” Tori explained. “She lost her goldeness.”

Initially, Tori—who shares two kids with Justin—admitted that the family felt hopeless.

“There’s nothing you can do for them,” she recalled. “There’s no way to help them.”

Indeed, Justin admitted that the family felt hopeless toward their once-spunky pup going dim.

“We thought, ‘Aw man,’” Justin shared. “This medication, we have to give it to her for the rest of her life, so this is how she’s going to be.”

It all changed, however, when Louie entered the picture, or rather the pond, a few months later.

“She started smiling again,” Tori mused of the family’s dog. “She started wagging her tail. She started having personality again.”

In fact, the dog and the duck’s unlikely friendship sparked so much joy in the Cannarelli home that they decided they’d spread it to social media, starting the Duck and a Dog Instagram account in August 2024.

“We never imagined that people from all over the world would fall in love with Barley and Louie the same way we had,” the family wrote on their pets’ website. “What began as a fun account for friends quickly grew into a community of people who simply needed something positive to smile about.”

And Barley and Louie’s surprisingly friend circle is only getting crazier. The Cannarellis recently welcomed a pet bunny, Moo, to their home.

The family just got a little fluffier,” the Cannarellis shared in an Aug. 1 Instagram post, alongside a video of Barley and Louie walking up to Moo’s cage. “We can't wait for you to see this next chapter with Barley, Louie, and their newest little friend.”
