Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) is finally lifting the curtain on his upcoming film Digger, starring Tom Cruise in the titular role. While the movie has been in the works for a while, all the previously released information has revealed very little detail on what the film will actually be about or who Tom Cruise's character is. One trailer even capitalized on Cruise's legendary career rather than the new movie itself. That is finally over now, as the first official trailer for the film lets audiences in on the wild ride Digger is shaping up to be.
Cruise's role in Digger is already getting comparisons to his comedic turn in Tropic Thunder as Les Grossman. Like that role, Cruise has undergone a bit of a transformation for the Iñárritu film. Gone are the chiseled abs of Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick. Instead, Cruise takes on the role of a Southern oil tycoon whose greed threatens to cause an environmental disaster. Digger is then tasked by the U.S. President (John Goodman) with fixing his mistake and saving the world.
The film is billed as a satirical comedy and has shades of 2021's Don't Look Up and Stanley Kubrick's 1964 masterpiece of political satire, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. With Digger, Cruise seems fully ready to put Ethan Hunt behind him in search of awards glory. Iñárritu's work has a strong track record at the Oscars and Digger could continue that.
Cruise gets top billing as the titular character of the film, but Digger's supporting cast is nothing to sneeze at. The trailer offers brief glimpses of Sandra Hüller (Project Hail Mary) and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia). Besides Cruise, the standouts from the trailer are Goodman as an aging President and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), who plays an antagonistic presence who points out Digger's mistakes. Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name) is also set to appear in the film.
Digger is set to be released in theaters on Oct. 2, 2026.
