Reportedly, the Transformers franchise could be crossing over with a famous sci-fi property soon. Recently, Transformers One earned widespread praise for its emotional retelling of Optimus Prime and Megatron's origins despite falling short at the box office, leading Paramount to lose interest in the planned animated sequel even though Josh Cooley and the creative team originally envisioned a trilogy. However, Transformers' live-action continuity continues to move forward. Paramount has reaffirmed that multiple Transformers movies remain in development, including the long-discussed G.I. Joe crossover that grew directly out of Rise of the Beasts, alongside additional projects that have emerged following CinemaCon announcements and new creative pitches.

Among the Transformers franchise's many crossovers, several have achieved lasting recognition across comics, television, games, and movies. Marvel's original Transformers comics crossed paths with everyone from Spider-Man to Circuit Breaker, cementing themselves as one of the earliest examples of Cybertronians interacting with another major sci-fi universe. IDW later united the Autobots with G.I. Joe and created an expansive Hasbro shared universe that laid important groundwork for today's Energon Universe. Outside the comics, Transformers has shared the spotlight with Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Top Gun, My Little Pony, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and numerous other franchises through toys, promotional campaigns, and video games.

The next Transformers project may be a crossover with a familiar franchise, set in the Autobots and Decepticons' home universe.

Transformers Is Reportedly Crossing Over With The Micronauts

The Micronauts May Be Joining The Energon Universe Soon

According to Bleeding Cool, Hasbro and Skybound are working on a new line of Micronauts comics set in Transformers' Energon universe, which would bring the Micronauts mythos closer to its lifelong companions, ROM the Space Knight and G.I. Joe. Plot and production details are yet to be confirmed, but if the project materializes, Hasbro could create a wide variety of brand-new team-ups and crossovers, not only between Micronauts and Transformers, but also with G.I. Joe, MASK, and Void Rivals.

A few years ago, after IDW Publishing acquired the comic license from Hasbro, the Micronauts headlined a shared continuity that also incorporated ROM, G.I. Joe, Transformers, MASK, and other Hasbro properties through the Revolution and First Strike crossovers. This initiative eventually came to an end when IDW lost its Hasbro licenses, leaving the Micronauts absent from comics for several years even as Marvel regained the right to republish Bill Mantlo and Michael Golden's celebrated original run in omnibus format in 2023. Marvel's Micronauts collections restored one of their most acclaimed licensed series to print, but they didn't signal a return of the characters to Marvel's comic universe.

Bleeding Cool's report that the Micronauts are now headed to Skybound's Energon Universe suggest a major turning point that could finally give the property a stable long-term home alongside some of Hasbro's strongest modern franchises. Micronauts revolves around interdimensional war, with advanced civilizations, tyrannical empires, and living technology, all concepts that coexist beside the Autobots' war against the Decepticons and G.I. Joe's conflict with Cobra. In the Energon Universe, the Microverse could introduce civilizations and conflicts on an entirely different scale to Transformers' conventional planetary and interplanetary adventures.

Bill Mantlo's original The Micronauts series is the first version that many may associate with the franchise, and Marvel's 2023 omnibus program celebrated the property's origins. However, decades of licensing changes have encouraged audiences to view the Micronauts as an independent science-fiction mythology capable of thriving in multiple continuities. ROM followed a similar path with IDW's interconnected Hasbro universe before becoming part of the Energon Universe, despite the Space Knight's own classic Marvel history receiving renewed attention through collected editions.
