Unplayable Kingdom Hearts Game Officially Getting an Unexpected Revival

You'd be hard-pressed to find a game series more complicated (or convoluted) than Kingdom Hearts. While there have only been three mainline entries since the series began in 2002, there are plenty of hard-to-track down spin-offs that have a large impact on the overarching story of the games. Such is the case for the mobile spinoff Kingdom Hearts Union X Dark Road. While characters from the game are set to return in Kingdom Hearts 4, Square Enix fully delisted Union X Dark Road from storefronts in 2024. That's a bit of a conundrum for fans hoping to understand a key part of the Kingdom Hearts story. Thankfully, one dedicated fan may have a solution.

Posting to X on Sept. 21, Kingdom Hearts modder Arena7664 made the surprise announcement that they had ported Union X Dark Road to mobile and PC via browser, writing that "I'm pretty much ready to publish this aside from a couple things here and there." Arena7664 goes on to explain the details of the upcoming release, noting that only Dark Road (which was released as a standalone game within Union X) will be playable. That's because this will be a port of the final version of the game's original mobile app, which let players access Dark Road offline while the Union X story could only be viewed in cutscenes.

The upcoming port will include both the Japanese and English versions of the game and be uploaded to the Internet Archive for preservation. Arena7664 does not intend to make drastic changes to the gameplay experience, but will include some quality-of-life improvements. For players who just want to experience the story, there will be a button to instantly unlock all the cutscenes and an option to give yourself as much in-game currency as possible to unlock and level without restrictions. The ability to speed up or slow down the game has also been added. While no hard release date has been set, Arena7664 says the wait won't be too much longer, and they'll post a link when it is ready.

Union X Dark Road is a prequel to the mainline Kingdom Hearts games. The story of Union X is chronologically the earliest story in the series and follows a character called the Master of Masters during the Keyblade War. Dark Road chronicles series antagonist Xehanort's origins and how he was set on the path of evil.

In the June 2026 Nintendo Direct gameplay trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, a number of Union X Dark Road characters appeared. This means the mobile title's story will likely be pretty important to the next mainline game. We don't know exactly how these characters will connect to the next chapter in Sora's story, but fans will want to be familiar with them before the game releases. Or you could just go blind, because Kingdom Hearts is all about the vibes anyway.
